unopened guide

Reading all the posts of this site has really made me realize there is a lot more to learn about unopened material. Is Mark Murphy`s old unopened guide still the best resource out there, besides tuning into this message board?

Well, I guess I am going to have to change my profile pic, LOL. I am sure there is plenty of people on here that are knowledgable enough to help you on any questions you have. Didn't Mark Murphy update or make a second version of his book??

The 2nd version was from 10 years ago. It's still great as a reference, but of course price guide is not useful.
  • Thanks probably can pick one up for a few bucks, I can change mine Stingray I don`t post enough to have preference.

it's got good information in regards to detecting reseals, etc. but there is so much info that isn't in there that is often posted here- cello serial numbers, sequencing, rack details, etc.
There also isn't a comprehensive guide to the variations within each year in terms of wrappers, nor definitive info on how many cards per pack, what cards can be found within certain wrappers ('59 Fleer having #68 in one type of pack, but not the other, for example), what, if any, wrappers were used in years other than their main issue, etc.

Would be nice to assemble that knowledge in one place and either prove or disprove commonly held beliefs.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Anthony, you're in full brain-dump mode today.

The book is a good beginner's piece but as has been mentioned there's a TON not in it. Google search old CU threads like the stars on top cellos and there's a wealth of valuable information in there from some great board members.

There's another old price guide around from a guy that used to call himself The Prince of Cards. (Darren Prince) I have a copy of his 3rd edition from 1994. The information has been useful in the past to me. The pictures are black and white.

Even though it's outdated, I really like Murphy's guide. Lots of neat pictures of vintage packs and some cool stories in there. Perhaps some of the gurus on here should get together and post a new guide with all the knowledge shared on this site.
