What was the most expensive raw coin you bought on ebay?

And how did it turn out? I think mine was a fugio that I bought for around $400. Turned out extremely well, one of my favorite coins in my collection and I wouldn't sell it even if offered twice that.

I paid 3k for a buffalo nickel I won in an auction. Then I paid for the 24 hour grading and shipping sending it to pcgs for grading just to find out what I thought as soon as I looked at the coin, CLEANED. I sent it back to where it came from $300.00 less money in my pocket. It was a coin from GSC so I should have known better.image

Either of these, both in the $550 range, if memory is correct. The 26-S speaks for itself, and is still raw, in a Capital holder with the rest of the set. The O/C was graded MS-64 by NGC, and I still own it.

I've bought a few in the $500 range from known and trusted sellers, and it's been fine.

I bought three raw common Saint Gaudens gold coins in 2006.....heart was thumping.

I believe at that time they sold on eBay for approx $600.

Sent off to PCGS....all came back MS64!!! image

ps. will never do that again.

I've never spent more than $100 on a raw coin on eBay. But I have certainly purchased a few that are worth more than $100.

Or just buy the fakes, right Eclectic? image

I've purchased raw coins on ebay that were in the 4-6k range a few times. And once, higher.

All but one worked out nicely, and that one was a painless return. But, each time I had a pretty good idea who I was dealing with.

1795 Dollar, lower grade but still.......turned out the edges were filed. Was a learning experience.

bought a 1799 DB dollar. Forget what the price was... maybe around $700 to $900? But it graded VG08 at PCGS.

Also bought a raw 1795 DB dollar. Came back as possibly whizzed from PCGS. You win some you lose some. Forget what I paid... both were over 5 years ago, could even been 10 years.

it is comical to listen to people's "fear" of buying raw coins on ebay, with the way ebay is structured to accommodate even the most brain dead buyer, is it even possible to lose money on an ebay purchase ?

A raw AMERI Chain Cent. Paid $625. Certified it immediately, and turned it over for a very nice profit. The seller posted very nice pics, so I was fairly certain it was the real deal. Probably my best deal on eBay.

I got a silver dime (junk silver) with eBay bucks once. That's the only raw coin I've ever purchased on eBay.

Close to $300 I have spent on one coin. Turned out to be a deal and flipped it for close to $500 to a dealer that pays well.

At least a dozen ranging from $1K to $3K over the past three years or so. All have done well, some have done extremely well. But the best ones have been bought for far less!

Yes when a seller offers a return you have to pay shipping and sometimes a restocking fee.

The most I spent on a raw coin was 1895.00 on a Morgan $ and it turned out just fine.

$950 AU 1892-O Barber Half. It turned out terrible. Coin was cleaned and problematic. $200-$300 is my upper limit on unholdered coins now. Otherwise, the fees to holder are low enough on a percentage basis that the coin should be holdered (if it can be holdered).

I bought an 1883 T$ Proof with incredible toning for about $3,500. But upon receiving the coin it had serious hairlines so I returned it to GSC for refund. Toning will totally hide hairlines in a picture on a proof. I also want to thank forum members for giving me good advice on the coin.

This. Currently in a PCGS Genuine holder, but indisputably worth many multiples of the cost basis. image

I think probably a low ball seated dollar for $80-$90. I was pleased.
  • Back when I first started on e-bay I was buying raw lincolns. One of my purchases was a 1914-d. I paid $485.00 . Coin never received, I got scammed, My fault completely, Seller insured coin, kept coin, and collected the insurance $$ from the post office. I inquired from the local police, Seller not at this address. Like I said. My fault for not reading sellers feedback. Lesson Learned the hard way.

    Around $800.

Also the approximate cost of the most expensive PCGS coin I've bought on Ebay and then cracked out and made raw.

Above that figure, I tend to leave it in the plastic.

I think I got close to a $500 purchase with an 1805 bust half that later graded PCGS VF30. Worth much more than $500 now. Bought a 1796 Cap cent back in 2002 that would have cost me $760, but someone thankfully emailed me and told me it was a stolen pic from an auction 3 months ago. It was indeed a stolen photo posted by a very slick con artist in Maryland who had been at this game for years. The attorney general refused to prosecute the guy on behalf of the other buyers who got completely hosed for up to $5k each, but I had no issue because I never paid for mine.image Lesson learned: wait a few hours before you press that Paypal button, regardless of how good the pic looks.

Most expensive I sold raw was a XF40-ish details 1798 S-155 large cent, which had been recolored, tooled, etc. but had great eye appeal due to its smooth, light brown surfaces. Sold it around $900-$1000. Buyer said it was much better than expected based on my description. I also sold an 1818 B-9 bust quarter, XF+ details, with dark corrosion for around the same amount. Both were true auctions, FWIW.

Took a couple years to get it graded at PCGS. Was the first one PCGS took out of a blister pack and the second MS68 graded.

In 2007, I bought on a Sunday afternoon,
a raw, Gem Red BU Sacagawea Dollar struck
    on a Cent Planchet.

I was the high bidder at $13,350

(I might be off a few hundred on the $350)

It graded MS-67, as I recall. Still in the same
collection that I sold it to, although the owner
passed away a few years ago. His wife, who
does appreciate errors, is keeping that coin,
and a few others, including an Indian Head Cent
struck on a $2.5 Gold planchet.

$400 as I recall. An 1880-O VAM 49 Morgan that graded 63 at PCGS. Enjoyed it for several years, then turned it into a patio cover and some other household items.
    When in doubt, don't.

I've purchased many have between $500 and $1,000. All of them were submitted to our host for grading and all but one graded. No complaints here, but one definitely needs to have expertise in what they're buying.
    I love them Barber Halves.....
  • I bought nine Morgan's awhile back (all fairly common cc's) all in auctions. Paid $250-350 for all. Sent them off to Pcgs and all came back in various ms. Problem was, they were not high enough ms. The only winner was a 1891-cc that I was hoping would be ms60. Came back 62.

Recently paid $2500 for a 1895-s MORGAN. Beautiful coin, full Brest feathers and all. Gonna sit on it awhile before sending it off. Don't want to know if I've made another mistake quite yet!

I once bought a Roman sestertius of the emperor Pupienus on eBay, for about $400-something. (Pupienus is a rather tough emperor as his short reign lasted only three months in the year 238).

Normally bidding on a rare emperor Roman on eBay is fraught with some peril, but in this case it was a published Wildwinds plate coin and the dealer was reliable.

It was a good purchase and a neat coin.

I just spent $1275 on a raw Seated half on eBay, which greatly exceeds my previous record. I have never owned this date, and I love the look of this coin, so I pulled the trigger. I think I am OK with this seller if the coin turns out to be bad for some reason.

About $2,200 for a 1860 $20 Lib. It graded PCGS MS-61 and I sold it for $8,500 at a Heritage auction.

About $330 earlier this year for a raw $1 gold with a rim clip, the purchase was out of my comfort zone in every way other than I knew the error was real.

What are those worth? I would think clips on coins that small would not be very common.

A bit over $2k for a 1796 cent, maybe F15+. I never had it graded. Just put it in the Dansco.
