1989 Upper Deck

I recently bought at case of 89 UD low numbers from Steve at BBCE. The plan is to open half the boxes and sit on the other half.
I remember this coming out when I was 14 years old. I never really opened any of it as it was more expensive and harder to find. Well, my first pack from my first box I opened produced a Griffey Jr! So far I have opened (6) boxes. The last box I opened yesterday yielded (5) Griffey Jrs!
Just wanted to share with the board.

Good luck on the rest!
So far out of the 6 boxes I have 9 Griffey Jrs, 2 John Smoltz, 2 Randy Johnson (1 has a ding on the corner ), and 1 Craig Biggio.
<< <i>I once saw a guy get 873 Jose Cansecos in a box of 1988 Donruss (or was it some other year?) >>
And put on the BBQ too! Man I miss those posts.

It was 1989s: Link
Too bad the pics are gone now
<< <i>Didn't Jose go swimming too?? >>
Can't recall if he did but many others took a dip. In the pool and in the tub.
A few weren't as lucky and only got beer and cigarette ash on them.
<< <i>Getting an 89 UD Griffey is on my collecting to-do list. >>
If you are okay with one that is off centered to the left I have an extra you can have.
If it was only Griffey................

<< <i>89 Griffeys are a must have for anyone collection who collects baseball cards IMO. It's an important card in the hobby. Probably the most important and recognizable card in the last 25 years. I purchased a 10 from Mike a couple of years ago but sold it a few months later for another purchase but I recently picked up another from Matt. The card is finally starting to go up in past the $300 range on every sale these days which is amazing for that card since there are a million out there which keeps the price very affordable for most collectors. I would say that it will get up to the $400 range once he enters next year. >>
Not worth as much but I would consider 89 Hoops Robinson just as important, for basketball cards.

$300 for raw?
And no, not $300 raw lol. For a PSA 10

No, in a PSA 10
<< <i>I certainly remember that Robinson card. That was also a big one. I wasn't into basketball cards but i recognized the significance of the Robinson card when I was a kid. I remember it being super hot.

That's what I figured but when you said there were a million out there...

<< <i>Didn't they let the presses run on full sheets of just the Griffey? Or is that urban legend? >>
No, that's true. They gave the cards as bonuses to employees.

<< <i>I believe I have opened about 7 boxes since 1989 and still have yet to pull a Ken Griffey Jr. >>
Man that sucks, out of the 6 boxes I opened only 1 didn't have a Griffey. That last one with (5) in it was quite the rush.
Unfortunately, I did not spend a lot on this product. I bought the two boxes which yielded 40 Don Aase cards and packs that would total another box. I only got 1 Griffey.

Personally, I've always liked the Donruss and Fleer cards more aesthetically but I'm very clearly in the minority.

Cards 1-100 in 1989 Upper Deck all can be found with the following variation - either "TM" or the enclosed "c" copyright symbol to the right of the team or rookie logo on the front of the card.
For 99 of those cards the "c" is by far the more scarce variation by 15 or 20 to 1 ratio.
With the Griffey the "c"'s appear abundantly and the ratio probably falls to 5 to 3 ratio from 20 to 1. I would say that Upper Deck was producing Griffey's with the "c" in vast quantities to have that type of effect of population relative to the other cards.

Perhaps the greatest thread I'd ever seen on this board. I cried with laughter every time I went to that thread.
Getting those as a 10 is pretty tough because not only is the centering not the best, but the hologram on the back needs to be perfect to. The combination of both makes it difficult. Of the 5 I sent in, they came back as followed, I still dunno how I let that 3 happen.
