Wax Box Rehabilitation

Anyone recently perform any rehab/refurbishment to vintage wax boxes? I'm undertaking a project 1971-72 Wax Box and would appreciate some advice. Specifically, what type of adhesive works best for repairing/gluing the box back together.

  • I would use a clear double face adhesive then throw that thing in the trash.
  • i would use a clear double faced adhesive, make sure that you dont have anything hanging over the edges, ball that garbage up and throw it away!

I have about 7 that immediately came to mind, but I'm just going to go with "Good luck in your endeavor". Call it my good deed for the day.

    See this thread: Link

Foam posterboard frame for the inside to build it up initially, then do one for the outside. Remove the inner to tape it into shape as best you can.

The best way to display is unfold it and put it in a large top loader.

I don't see any issue with trying to restore an empty wax box for display purposes. Many people collect empty boxes.

I would recommend getting some shrink wrap and a heat gun, filling the interior of the box with some plastic or styrofoam and then shrinkwrapping the box. The process of shrinkwrapping the box will solidify it and significantly improve its appearance for display. Mike (stone193) recently posted a thread after shrinkwrapping with some great results.

That's probably the toughest '70s sports display box. From my high grade 1971-1976 run of all four sports I'm missing only '71 and '73 Basketball and '72 Hockey.

I"m in the middle of shrink wrapping about 50 boxes, a few in pretty rough shape. IMO you don't need to do any restoration with foreign substances, just build an internal frame of foam core and then heat shrink them- it makes them appear significantly nicer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I found this thread from the boards explaining the box. The one I purchased is the rarer 12 count variety it seems.

Box showed up today. It is complete - so I'm following Vols1' advice and unfolding/storing in a top loader. It actually was delivered that way.
