1987 O-Pee-Chee baseball rip

Decided to rip a box of 87 OPC. I don't have great hopes but would be pleased with a Bonds that had a shot at a 9 or a Canseco that had a shot at a 10. Not holding out hope though. I've ripped a couple of cases of this stuff and never come close on either. I'll post scans of the highlights every 9 packs. Wish me luck!

The good news is that the cold north kept the packs in great shape. Most of the gum is still loose and what isn't pops right off without leaving a stain. Pulled a Canseco but no shot at a 10. These were the HOFers.

    I don't believe I have ever seen 1987 OPC.

    Are these very rare?

Didn't know about the Rose. I've got a couple of monster boxes full of past rips that I'll have to go through one day if I get bored.

I don't believe 87 OPC is any rarer than 88 or earlier years.

Pulled another Canseco, although this one is even worse than the first. Halfway through the box.

Three quarters through the box, still no Bonds.

Hmm.... maybe? (the snow/specks are on the scanner not the card)

    Any Bonds yet?

Centering is tough on these OPC issues.

Nope, no Bonds in the box this time. Opening it reminded me why I stopped ripping these before -- like you said, Tim, centering is just a nightmare. Still had a lot of fun going down memory lane. If I get the urge later, maybe I'll rip another box.

The first Rose does look mighty sharp.

Good luck pulling a Bonds that is centered better than 92/8.
  • I recently ripped 3 boxes of this stuff. Talk about horrible quality control. I don't think I got one card in the entire lot that was PSA 10 worthy.

For those that don't know, Lee isn't using hyperbole. The overwhelming majority of the Bonds cards are borderline miscut. I've never pulled a Bonds that would straight 8 and I doubt I've pulled one that would straight 7 either. Not sure where it is on the sheet but the T/B centering is always a disaster.

Definitely true based on the experience I've had with that card as well.

It makes it surprising that a a PSA 9 only sells for $24.95.

Also, good luck with getting a Greenwell. That's a really tough pull in any grade. Near impossible.

Is there a 1987 OPC Greenwell? Don Sutton is #259.

Love the 87 Topps and OPC design. 87 Topps was the first product I opened a number of packs of. Love the Future Stars and Topps All Star Rookie cards!
