BBCE Mailday for me:) (scans included)

In honor of the (hopefully) upcoming group rip being put together by Flatfoot, I though I'd share the contents of my latest BBCE shipment. I have been waiting eagerly for this package since Steve emailed me last Thursday saying he shipped it out. I got the package on Wed and finally had time to rip it and take some pictures. Here are some pics along with a running commentary. Very pumped to get all this stuff in hand, thanks for letting me share.

Came back from lunch on Wed with this package waiting for me in the officeimage It was a long afternoon finishing up work so that I could get home and get into the box!

Kid is in bed, so time to rip the box. The outer box is all that will be ripped as everything will be staying unopened. Here is an overview shot of the contents.

A bunch of football in this box. First, I need to give a shout out to James, JFKHeat. I have gotten to know him over the past year as we have shared a bunch of PM's on unopened and collecting over the past year or so. He recently bought a lot of 88 FB cello boxes and knowing that I wanted one for my collection he sent this one in to Steve for me to be wrapped. I asked him how much he wanted for the box and he said he was giving it to me. Very generous gesture. Thanks James! Along with the 88 FB Cello box is an 87 FB Cello box I bought directly from Steve. I have an 80-88 run of FB wax boxes and I am hoping to complete the same run for Cello and Rack boxes. Also pictured below are a couple of FB rack boxes for that run, 1986 and 1987. 1986 is my favorite FB set, I like the design and being a 49er fan, I love the RC class particularly Rice and Steve Young.

I am really into rack packs and boxes right now. I recently started actively collecting 70's rack packs in baseball. I have been collecting star on top rack packs in FB for a while now though. My main focus is 80's FB racks with stars on top, because that is the decade I started watching football as a kid. I am hoping to get most of the major 80's RC's showing on a rack over time. My main focus so far has been my 49ers racks. Included in this shipment was 1 Steve Young Top that I had purchased from eBay and sent to Steve as well as 3 racks I already had in my collection that I sent to Steve to be wrapped (the Rice Bottom, another Steve Young Top and Ronnie Lott Top).

Of all the things in the box, this may have been the one I was looking forward to getting the most. It is probably the least valuable item in the box. But it gets me one step closer to completion on my first registry set. I am now 2 cards away from completing my 1961 Fleer basketball set with this card. I couldn't be more excited.

As always, if you managed to look and/or read this far, thanks for looking and letting me share part of my collection!

Wow, simply awesome! Some of my favorite stuff! I'm right there with you on the 80s football, including the star studded racks, and 79 is my favorite baseball set. Congrats and thanks for sharing.
  • Awesome, awesome, awesome Steve. That "little baseball addition" looks case fresh. One of the nicest 79's you'll see. Steve is one of the kindest most generous guys I've met in the hobby so I'm always happy to see when he gets great stuff. Congrats!

PS: I'm now on tilt for an 87 and 88 Football cello, those are really nice looking.

    Best,

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Not sure what's more impressive -- that cornucopia of unopenedness or your ability to remain productive after receiving it in your office. I would be one useless mother the rest of the day, I'm telling you that right now.

That is a savory assortment, Steve, and that 79er is especially alluring!

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

Boy oh boy, did I pick the right day to stop by this place!! 80's football everywhere!! So many pieces in these I would
love to haveimage Congrats on a sweet haul!!
I dont wanna grow up, Im a Toys-R-Us kid!
  • Those look great Steve! Your boxes look super clean nice score. I wish the rack and cello boxes had a cellophane window in them so you could see the packs. 86 topps football is my favorite modern set, the first cards I ever owned as a kid. I think I was ten years old my dad bought me a factory set plus the 1000 yard club set from a card shop with enough pages for all the cards for my b day. I must have put those cards in and out of the pages 20 times lol. I've been working on a nice raw set for the last six months now built mostly from rack packs. Stay strong that 86 rack box wouldn't have lasted the night at my house lol. image

That's my kind of mail day!

Some truly harder to find boxes from the 1980's to be sure. For some reason, 1987 cello boxes seem to be surprisingly difficult to find and 1988 cellos boxes seem to most always be x-outs, for example.

Neither of the rack boxes are readily available on eBay 24x7, especially relative to their baseball counterparts.

2 cards to go on an epic set like 1961 Fleer Basketball has to feel good... I totally get why that was the highlight of this box for you.

Awesome additions, Steve, and a terrific gesture by James.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words. It has been a really fun project building my unopened collection. Much like the 61 Fleer BK set, it was easy to pick things up early when I first got back into collecting because I was starting from scratch. As I got more unopened and further into my set, the collection became more nuanced (becoming more picky about centering, looking for FASC items and rarer unopened items, etc.). I have lots of people on here to thank for sharing their knowledge and insights into the hobby and for inspiring different parts of my collection. Thanks for looking and all the nice replies:

Tim--Seeing your unopened collection (and CPAMike's) when I first got on the boards in 2013 was one of the things that inspired me to jump into unopened. Thanks for all your help in answering my unopened questions. You are one of the most knowledgeable and helpful guys on the boards. I've got a ways to go to catch your baseball collection but I've got you in football, lol.

baz518--Thanks for your reply. I enjoy your posts and judging by what I've seen in your BST posts you've got a great collection yourself.

Scott--Those are about the nicest things anyone's ever said about me, lol. Seriously, thanks for the kind words. It's been great getting to know you on the boards. Can't wait to see the updates on your collection.

JBrules--The last two cards I am missing are Sam Jones and Dave Gambee. I also need to upgrade two cards, Bob Boozer and Jerry West IA which I have in PSA 6 (the rest of my set is in 7). I actually see that 4SC has the Boozer in 7 which is a super rare card, but it has a very distracting tilt. While the 7 would be an upgrade for the label, it would be a downgrade for the card in the holder, so I will wait.

Jeremy--This was actually an accumulation of product. Probably a couple months of purchases that Steve kept in Indiana for me until I asked him to ship it to me.

Doug--You are one of the good guys on these board. As I have said before, your autograph thread is one of the reasons I share my pickups because I think those are my favorite threads: people sharing their collection and passion.

Snorto--As usual you are spot on in your observations. The cellos are almost always X-outs. And 80's FB rack boxes are some of the hardest products to find in the 80's. Just do a completed search on ebay and see how few of them are on there. Thanks for your note on James. It was really a nice thing for him to do.

James--You have an awesome unopened collection. It has been great talking unopened with you over the past year or so and sharing our experiences. Thanks again for the box!

Manny--When I complete my set I will probably end up around 20 or 25 in the rankings, so I will be looking up at you in the standingsimage My ranking means very little to me though. It is all about just completing the set for me. I can't wait to get the last pieces of the puzzle.

Steven--Your Topps FB run thread is a thing of beauty. I don't have anything near that. But it has been fun building what I have. Talk to you soon!
