Unfortunately, though, it's not an authentic Topps cello pack. Topps did not produce 12-card so-called grocery cellos in the early 1970s. The only authentic cello from 1972 was a 27-card jumbo cello housed in a blue outer cardboard box.

Grocery cello or regular box cello?

Well this has the gum in between so i will let PSA decide that one for me. and it is wrapped exactly the same as my 81' football packs going in.

Save your money. Steve will not authenticate it. Topps did resume producing grocery cellos in 1981. There were none produced between 1970 and 1980.

GAI graded these in error for a time. It is not legit. That is, it was not produced by Topps. The Ryan looks great, though!

No, the GAI cello is not legit, either.

Back when Ryan Rutter was the head pack grader for GAI, he mistakenly slabbed a number of so-called grocery cellos from 1970 through 1975. Later on, he realized that they were not authentic and stopped authenticating them. That is why every "grocery" cello in a GAI holder from this era begins with a cert # 102XXX. GAI stopped holdering them after that, and PSA has never holdered them.

Sorry it's probably not what you want to hear after getting a pack as nice as you did for your collection but save the submission fees and chalk it up to a good lesson learned. Hopefully you bought the cello from a reputable seller that will refund you purchase.

Grote and these guys def know what they are talking about.
Sorry to hear about it. And it has happened to most if not all of us. Looks great.

Before you open it, can you get a refund? Also, can you share who's selling these ones so we don't get burned and he stops profiting and ripping us all off?

Btw, that Ryan looks good enough to be graded by looks of the front of it. I hope the back looks just as good.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

There's no evidence that these were made to intentionally defraud anyone. I remember in the mid-seventies I answered an ad in a sports publication and bought a ton of cello-wrapped '72s from a guy in NYC. They were not represented as original Topps product, I didn't care, I was just a 10 year old who wanted some '72s. My point is that at least some these could have been wrapped in the '70s, just like the Christmas racks that were. The only thing that's certain is that they were not wrapped by Topps.

I mention that because it seems hard to believe someone concocting these today would use such a nice card on the front. It's not like these are bringing in hundreds of dollars.
