My recent submissions -- Problem with "screw down holders"

Has anyone ever noticed this?

I have submitted thousands of cards over the past 20 years, but only seen this happen with the subs from this month.

When a card has been stored in a tight, non recessed, screw down holder (which were all the rage at one time) for a long period of time, the corners of the card often come out looking glossy, like part of the surface has been affected by the pressure and time.

One two recent subs I had cards with this problem get returned as "altered" without receiving a numerical grade. I assumed they would be marked down significantly, but didn't think they would not grade cards like this.

Is this a new policy? Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hey Greg,

My childhood Largent rookie had some corners like that after being in a screw holder for 23 years It ended up grading out as a psa six. Mine was subbed two years ago though. Maybe you had a picky grader?

This happened to me with a Gretzky OPC RC. Sent it in a second time and it graded what it should have the first time: 6
  • Yes, "ice blocking" could be considered a possible sign of altering. I recall back in the 80's, when those screw down holders were so popular, guys would take a card with a dinged corner(s) and put them in a screw down and torque down the pressure and they would flatten a corner back out over time.

Part of the reason I ask is because this happened to me with two different cards in two different submissions this month.
I was planning to resubmit them but didn't want to waste my time if this was a new policy .

  • Greg, I don't know for sure, but I'd say it probably depends on the grader. Some may look at it as damage and give it a grade, and others may see it as potential altering. Personally, if all the card has is ice blocking on the corners, I look at it as surface damage that should receive a grade.

I wonder if a phone call to PSA on Monday could clear this up before you potentially re-submit? If might be worth the effort.

Stan the man , That is probably what I'm going to do . I have a bunch of questions and I might as well see if I can get them answered over the phone. I will update this thread to let everybody know what I find out .
