Is that gouge an "innie" or an "outie?"

If raised, it's in the die.
    If incused, it's damage.

Sometimes the photo shadows can fool ya.
Worst seem to be large cent Coronet style. I often see the image as having incuse letters.

Pretty sure it is a contact mark. PMD.
Not raised but I could see, optically, where one would think that.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Looks like a bag mark.

Obviously you have to judge by the shadows.

After staring at it for a bit, my take is that it's a bag mark. The reason I think this is due to the fact that the top point of the vertical portion of the L (A) and the top of the lower horizontal
portion of the L (B) are both illuminated from the same direction. The lower length of the suspect mark (C) has to be illuminated from same direction which can only be if it were indented
so its surface faces the same light source. If it was raised, then the mark's shadow/illumination would be reverse.

But don't let that stop anyone from buying a discovery piece and proving my science wrong. image

And lastly, a quickie photoshop that shows the suspect mark with the lighting and shadows reversed, most likely what it would look like if it were raised. Looking at this makes it more
convincing, at least to me, that it's a bag mark.
