Nice pull! I'm not familiar with the set...what is the normal Jeters per box ratio?

I think that the jeter will grade a eight. I have graded two jeters by bgs both received a 8.5 grade and they had the same touched corner that yours shows on the back of the card. psa grades tougher then bgs does on jeters I assume. the rest of your cards look great. it must have been fun opening a sp box. I opened two boxes back in 93 when they first came out and got a jeter in each box. I got four johnny damon rookies. I graded one of them and received a nine for it. maybe in the future the damon might worth the grading fee if he makes the hall of fame.

Just curious, why do you assume this?

    +1

Upper Deck again raised the bar and created the "premium" market with this release.

I remember pulling an Emmitt All Pro out of a box and being blown away. I still love that All Pro set and put together a 1993 Upper Deck SP Master Set a while ago.

The football boxes were ridiculously hot with the now all but forgotten Drew Bledsoe leading the rookie class.

Football or Baseball, those foil rookies especially are unforgiving with chipping on the colored corners and surface issues.

I hope you do well on the Jeter... it takes guts to open these boxes given how tough it is to get high grades to cover the cost.

    Snorto~

    24 packs x 12 cards per pack = 288 cards

290 cards per set and a few inserts I think...like 1/9 packs or something like that.

So its pretty close to 1 Jeter per box...slightly worse than that, but just barely.

I have no idea what collation is like so I don't know if distribution is even, or if you might find 3-10 Jeters in one box, and a decent chance of no Jeters at all.

Wow, how did UD mess up the Gwynn card like that. It's not like it it a front shot!! image

  • These boxes are indeed very risky to open based on the possible return value. Thank you for the hope on the Jeter grade and I agree not looking like a '10' even after trying to talk myself in to it when looking at it with a loupe. I had opened a box a few years ago and there was no Jeter in sight so who knows the collation.

That Gwynn card did freak me out at first. Thought is was a rare error but after perusing ebay realized it was nothing special.

I have an unrelated question. Either I was seeing things or something is strange. I don't like to look at my orders online when they pop but check a lot and try to just look at the top few cards only if they were done. I have to do the one card at a time look when physically in hand. I could swear I saw my only current order there showing grades online, so I backed out and awaiting the grading done email. Nothing for a few days so I checked again and got the order being processed message. Was I mind freaking when I saw the grades simply vanish ?

Even before I saw your last post I knew the Jeter would come back MS. Very strange. I also pulled one 2 years ago from a group rip. Flawless card from what I saw. Figured 9 EASY. Then the dreaded MS came back. HMMMM

    Sorry to see that

Resubmit the Jeter. It will get a grade eventually.

Do 1993 SP cards come badly cut? Are their sizes all over the place? I know years ago I had a set but I dont remember the cards having QC issues other than chipping. This is the kind of stuff that annoys me. If its a beauty, send it to BGS.
  • Yeah this situation is a bummer for me. Really wanted a high grade Jeter (of courseimage ) Will compare the cuts when the cards comes back to see if I can tell how minimum size it is and if close will send in again and if FAIL, will take the BGS advice and see what happens. It does seem like the foil cards, all of them not just the Jeter, being cut from a separate sheet are off a bit mostly. never a problem with an N6 non foil card.

These boxes are definitely dangerous. Nothing really in them for big time except that Jeter and for 600 bucks a box it's a total waste if striking out with an N6.

Do you plan on grilling the Cansecos like you did last time?
  • I didn't get any of the Canseco's graded although the card is quite cool It is the one with him pitching which put him on the disabled list I think for a blown out elbow ! See one of the top pics above for the card.

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but since we are talking about SP Jeters....I noticed that BGS Jeters sell for considerably less than PSA Jeters. On a few issues, like the 84 football Marino and Elway, this is apparent because of the sheet cut cards, but is the MS rejection a reason on these? I have two 8.5 BGS Jeters, that sell for a lot less than the PSA 8.5's
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

With this being one of the 3 inherent risks,(N6 on the foils), along with suspect collation and cards possibly sticking together, I'm surprised the box price can sustain such a high value, knowing these negatives. I understand the allure of opening wax and the excitement of pulling the gem prize out of the box, but for me this seems a risky venture. I realize unopened comes with no guarantees, but I try to minimize the negatives going in. For myself I will steer clear of this box.

Want the thrill of pulling a Jeter rookie for a lot less? Buy a box of 93 Score Select (the green box) for around $35. You'll get at least one Jeter that will sell for $100 in PSA 10. You might also pull a neat Mantle Triple Crown insert.

In general PSA cards always sell for more than BGS or SGC. I really don't see why anyone sends cards to BGS or SGC especially if the intent is to resell.
  • A lot of modern autos graded by BGS 9.5 sell higher than PSA 9s and if you get a card graded Pristine it will sell significantly higher than a PSA 10. If you get a Jeter BGS 9.5 it will sell higher than a PSA 9. So i am not sure why you would only sub to PSA for resell. Vintage yes, PSA is untouchable.

It also seems a majority of people subbing Jeter SP from boxes lately gets Minimum size R, kind of weird. Best to keep that box sealed if purchased.

Ive been toying with buy a box of SP and just leaving it sealed on the shelf.

I did buy a BGS 9 Jeter a while back (subgrades were good...with a 9 for corners). The intent was to try to cross grade it to a PSA 9. I sent it in (still in the BGS holder) to PSA and they said it didn't meet the requirements to cross. So it was mailed back to me in the BGS case.

That was my first and probably last time to try to crossgrade something. I was just too nervous to crack it out and submit it raw
