Will this grade?

It obviously toned naturally in an old type set picture frame, but once it is removed from the holder, it loses its provenance and might be judged suspect. What do you think?

That toning looks pretty erratic (a lot of sudden color shifts); PCGS tends to dislike this.

    I say no grade.

I'd say "probably will" but there's only one way to find out for sure and she's definitely worth a shot.

I saw the first photos and said "meh, what's the big deal?". Then I saw the reverse. Very nice. I wouldn't worry too much about taking it out of the type set holder. The other coins don't look like anything special.

I think it will grade, but could take two or three tries. More than one or two attempts is hard to justify as it's pretty baggy. I'd definitely slab it reverse up.

There is no way to prove that the Morgan got its toning from that set, so I see absolutely no harm in removing it. It's no different from a double mint set - just because crazy toned coins currently reside in it lends no proof to whether or not the coin is AT.

PCGS didn't have a problem with either of these and you could argue that the are "sudden color shifts" on these and both also look original to me (and PCGS seems to agree).

this toning isn't a result of that type set holder
most likely came from a bag before that set held it

it should have no problem grading and probably will see a +

awesome find there and huge congrats eagle eyed one...i love it

Should grade MS63/64. And even if it doesn't, try it again with PCGS or NGC and you should get it soon enough. You already have plenty of people here who would pay a nice premium for it just as it sits.

image Yes reverse side up for sure!!! A very pretty coin and I don't see any problem with it grading.

I agree, it didn't get that toning in this frame, but it does appear that the edge toned rather dark, so it got some extra toning in the picture frame.

  • Ship the coin to PCGS in its current holder to prove the origin of the toning. PCGS usually frowns upon such improper-holder submissions, but will accept this rare exception considering the circumstances. PCGS has so accommodated me in the past.
