Question about 1989 Fleer Glossy sets

Anyone know how many they made and whether the factory cellophane wrapping had any markings on it?

Thanks in advance.

    estimate 30,000 sets produced

That said, heavily produced, but not much in demand, which is one of the reasons that Fleer stopped producing glossy sets after 1989. It is not an easy set to find.

The sets were distributed in tins, which were wrapped-

That's the thing, read that there were 30,000 made and yet there's usually only 1, maybe 2, available on eBay at a time and the Griffeys sell pretty well. Not to mention that there's roughly been the same amount of Fleer Glossy Griffeys submitted as Bowman Tiffany Griffeys.

The Griffey is tough to find centered and usually centered copies sell for a premium.

Fleer used clear cellophane with no logo markings to wrap their 1989 Glossy sets.
The cellophane tended to get a little brittle over time and would easily tear or
slightly rip on the seams. The bottom of the tin had a round gold foil sticker affixed to it
with five digits used to number the sets.

The sets were 15 per case and they were put into the case end to end, on their sides, 3 rows by 5 rows.

I have busted three of these. The cards generally are stuck together so be careful breaking it down. The cards come in unsealed bricks broken up by spacers.

Two out of the three Griffey's were way off centered. The third hit a PSA 10 so it was a successful venture.

  • Busted 5 of these In my ripping life and one of the sets seemed as though it was rewrapped and the griffey was disaster. I luckily pulled 3 others that got PSA 9s and one PSA 10. Very tough set and even though they greatly over produce Bowman Tiffany, Griffey Fleer G always seems to sell slightly higher than Bowman Tiffany. Look out for print lines on Griffey. Many have a line across the bottom about an inch up and top going across his helmet. Even if perfectly centered it will get a 9 most of the time, however Ive seen a few get a 10 despite the lines.

I have four of these sealed at the top of my closet. I've busted three over the years. None of the Griffey's were gradeable, all off-center and one with torn up/folded bottom edge. Once you're familiar with these, it's very easy to know if the cellophane is original. Like stated above, it's brittle, not very flexible and usually will have some tears. This is a great set.
