Good to know on the altered stock as I have a Superman card with someone's initials on it. Was going to erase and resub it, but now think I will leave it alone.
If you do choose to use an eraser I highly recommend the following. My first choice would be the vinyl, but gum isn't bad. I own both and they work great for this sort of thing.
the same panty hose used for wax residue removal might also lift a light pencil mark off a glossy front surface by rubbing it gently, but the indentation will not go away and would appear under strong magnification or light.
still makes a raw card look nicer, though, if that's what makes you happy.
Erasing will be deemed 'Altered' and not holdered, if you plan to grade.
I have submitted several cards that i erased pencil marks and they received nice grades. itzagoner is correct about the indentations but if the mark is on the back erasing can be done without detection. Use a professional grade draftsmen eraser (less than $5).
Depends on how light it is. I erased a light, small pencil mark off the back of a card once and it was light enough that it didnt leave an indent. It graded a 6 no qualifier.
