Smitty ... I remember you showing me some of these when you got them. GREAT COLLECTION you acquired. Are you going to get some of these slabbed along with the Hornsby?
Looks like Mr. Mathews moved quite a bit. Started in New Jersey (1945) ... moved to Texas in 1946 ... went back to New Jersey to another residence in 1947 ... and then back to the same Texas address in 1948.
STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Interesting catch, I wonder if he was a college student at the time, bouncing between rentals every school year and back home with the parents for summer break.
Very impressive. Really enjoyed the collection. Notice the use of the hotel envelopes. Must of been where the player was staying at the time of a game whether on the road or not? Would be great to get them on Antique Roadshow as I think the envelopes add quite a bit of value/interest to the collection. Much like having the original wrapper with baseball cards or the original box with an antique toy. Original boxes usually add up to 50% additional value to the collectable.

Incredible! Are you connected to Jack Mathews?? Just an aswesome collection!
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I like how the first dozen or so autos were nice, but somewhat pedestrian, then an absolute avalanche of killer autos hits. Wagner, Ott, Hornsby, Campy, Jackie, Mack.....WOW!!!!!!!!!!
Kiss me once, shame on you. Kiss me twice.....let's party.
Obviously the autos alone are spectacular, but I think the original envelopes make them even more amazing.

One of the most impressive threads I have seen on here in quite some time. Just an awesome TTM collection of that era's best players with the original envelope.
All of the hotels were in Texas. I'd venture a guess that Jack or someone he knew worked at a few of those places over time and snagged some extra envelopes for future use.
I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.
Great group of autos. Save a little dough if you want to get them authenticated, Ott and Campanella are secretarial. Email me if you want help with the others.
