This thread is a long time coming but it will consist of card purchases and everything Donnie related. I started it today because avatar upload day is around the corner. I am working on a project and it turns out they could be good avatars. Feel free to visit the link if you're looking for a Donnie avatar. I will continually add them over time so check back often.

It has been said that a player deserves HOF recognition if you could not tell the story of baseball in his era without mentioning him. I have often wondered how anyone could tell the story of 1980's baseball without mentioning Don Mattingly. No matter what a bunch of subjective hack writers say, Donnie Baseball will always be tops in my book. In a world filled with those who fail to reach their potential (see the likes of Strawberry, Darryl, whom I idolized as a boy), The Hitman's work ethic saw that mere 6' 175 lb-er put up a power and average combination that was truly rare for the time. In his one and only playoff series, The Don batted .417!

Mattingly has been on the HOF ballet for the full 15 years and now his next chance for the HOF will be with the Veterans Committee (whatever they call it now).

He has some long years ahead of him as a manager and any success there will only help him. What I think will put him over the edge in voting is his good citizenship and sportsmanship. The fact that he was one of the best defensive first baseman throughout his career along with being the best player in baseball for a stretch are all great assets, but because his career did slow down offensively in the later years, he is not going to coast through the committee that easy. With so many players caught in scandals in the last decade, even ones from Mattingly's era, he seems to look better and better everytime.

Whether or not he makes the HOF, he is already very popular as a former player and talked about by baseball fans all over the country. His cards and memorabilia are already priced as if he was in the HOF.

I think Don was a fantastic player. For about an 5 or 6 year span he was totally dominant. However, he is not HOFer. Neither is Dale Murphy, Jim Rice, Ron Santo, Tony Oliva and whoever else was a great player, but lacks the longevity or the wow factor. I know several of these guys are in the Hall, mainly for induction day activity reasons in my opinion.

Now collecting wise is another story. I like collecting Don, Dale, Jim, etc. And I consider them to be just below HOFer's ( I mean true HOFer's Mays, AAron, Clemente, Ripken, etc) as far as collecting is concerned.

Just my opinions.

I was in the hospital this past weekend getting my gall bladder removed. Didn't think the incisions would be this painful but I'm feeling better and am back.

Today I am here to share with you my Mattingly cachets (envelope commemoration). These are cachets I own. I don't want to get confused by posting what I haven't picked up yet but I will add them as I receive them. Basically, in Mattingly's case, these are envelopes that commemorate a specific athlete's awards/record breaking events/misc events. The date of the event is stamped with the location where it happened or the home town of the team, depending, the image depicted is usually taken from an artist (Susan Rini in most cases)and made of a satiny material, and lastly, usually has a stamp in the traditional corner. These typically run from anywhere between $4-$20. Sometimes a crazy seller wants more. I have a lot of DM material I want to buy so I personally have a lower limit I'm willing to spend on these. You can find some signed at a higher cost.

Donnie baseball got off to a tremendous start to his career with 5 100+ RBI seasons in his first 6 seasons plus an MVP award and runner up the next year. I remember watching him in HS, but don't remember him getting injured or anything along those lines - did he have a serious injury at some point in the early 90's? He was chugging along stat wise and then hit a wall. When he was on his game back in the mid 80's he put up some sick numbers.

Mattingly had an injury to his lower back that became chronic. He was never the same player afterwards.

His back was his primary injury but I read in an interview that he also had a wrist injury but don't remember the year.

Dan, thanks for the kind reply. I love Fenway but was only there once and can appreciate the storied franchise the Red Sox team is, being a White Sox fan. I have visited Boston a few times since 2010 since I now have family in the burbs. My bro-in-law's favorite FB player is also Andre Tippett.

Congrats on the poppage, especially the Nashville cards and SLU card. But congrats most of all on completing the basic run, and doing so with such a nice GPA! That basic set is a lot of cards, about 3 times the one I'm working on. Well done!

I wish PSA would realize that those " square proofs" are not proofs and just cut from the posters or
in the 90 Superstars or Tetley case the calendar. The oversized Jimmy Deans are the same thing just cut from the posters.
These should be graded just like the box bottoms..

True. I wish they would as well. I'm currently waiting on an email back from CS. I asked them if they would grade the Investor Journals. They graded Nolan Ryan's IJ's before but they are not currently in Mattingly's registry.

Jackstraw, you say the oversized Jimmy Dean's are cut from a poster. Is that the same for the 1994 Post oversized?

Your Mattingly collection is crazy. Because of the era when he played, he must be on a thousand cards, plus you keep picking up all these other things, like tix, porcelain and bobble heads. Nice variety and quite ambitious of you!

Don Mattingly collage

This took a while in the making. When I came back to Korea from the US in January, I brought back a lot of about 250 Mattingly cards from all years and brands. I took some with me to work and cut out what I needed from the cards. I believe I cut out an 11x14 piece of dark blue construction paper and glued the cards to the paper. I used foam tape to raise some of the images to appear 3D. There are a few more small sports I need to fill. I will try to get this framed.

Not thrilled with the outcomes on the Rice (pack pulled and owned for years), Griffey Jr (pulled from pack in Jan), S.I. or the General Mills but Im exstatic to get 11 squares encapsulated authentic. Happy about the 9s and 10s.

Congrats on some tough cards to get slabbed! Was the Rice stored in a screwdown holder? This can make the corners look pressed/stretched.

You may be right about the screwdown, didnt know any better back then and i think I remember it having a hairy corner.
