Some surprising ending prices on unopened

It does indeed seem that prices have stabilized from the hysteria of the past year or so. Was surprised to win a lot of 2 1979 vending boxes for $955 and a lot of 2 1977 vending boxes for $1825 in the PWCC auction.

But the end price of the 1980 Topps baseball vending box was a head-scratcher. $635. Nearly double what I've been paying. Someone must have wanted that box very badly. Maybe they were inspired by my recent rip thread!!

On a side note, I love 1977 Topps. First pack I ever bought was a 1977 cello with Chambliss showing from a bodega in the Bronx. But there isn't really a heart-stopping card when ripping like there is with 1975 or 1980, for example.

Its really getting hard to justify the unopened prices for 1980 and up. There was a lot of it produced still and when you speak of a vending box going for $635, I would rather have 2 psa 9 rickey Henderson rcs or a vintage topps rookie card in high grade from the 60s. Once it is opened, you just cant get your money back when you decide the odds.

I have to think the $635 is an aberration considering the rest of the market. What did I pay, around $3500 for ten boxes in November and about a grand for another three the next month. Two people really wanted that box last night I guess.

Like when I got $5 for my PSA 10 1984 Donruss Vance Law when the previous one went for $700. lol.

As to the other point regarding buying graded cards versus unopened, that's definitely a matter of preference. Buying already-graded cards is not my thing and I would never even think of doing it. I like to rip and sub. Only reason I re-entered the hobby.

Wait I take that back. Now that I have all this 1980 stuff, I have been mindlessly gobbling $6 PSA 10s in furtherance of my newly created 1980 registry set. It used to seem so silly to me but, man, I want to finish that set!

Congrats! It actually looks pretty good, though I'm not sure how you found that listing.

Those prices for 77 and 79 vending were still pretty strong, imo. Not crazy high but not cheap. Last few 1980 BBCE vending boxes had been selling for about $350 or even a bit less on ebay.
