Dig out your Julio Franco cards

Don't know if anyone caught this on ESPN's "Pardon the Interuption" TV show today. At 56 he is is to begin playing for a semi-pro team in Japan. The "Energizer Franco" indeed.

  • If he can get in just another 4 years, he should break into the 3,000 hit club. Post War Hall of Fame, add him to the set!!!!

That would make his first year of eligibility age 65.

I think Franco has over 3,000 hits if you combine the Japanese and Mexican Leagues. When he retired a number of years ago, I was kind of sad because he was still an asset to a team as a part time role player and perhaps a steady clubhouse presence. Many team mates of his thought he was inspiring to watch. I thought he was going to play long enough for 3,000 hits. He obviously has passion for the game if he is still getting up and going at this age. More power to him!!

I do have his Topps rookie card. I wanted one because I liked him as a player. Simple as that. Being so affordable makes it also a no brainer.

    Digging deep...

Julio's first cards are his 1980 TCMA Peninsula Pilots. 1980 TCMA is tough to get high grade due to the red borders. Only 1,100 sets made of the B&W and 2,500 of the color version for the Peninsula Pilots team sets that year.
