MERCURY FSB QUSTIONS?

Can u have an AU coin still have FSB? If so, is there a premium over a standard AU coin? The coin I have is a 1944-D. I was just thinking if you found a 1921 with these same traits would it command a higher premium?

PCGS will only give the FB designation to a few like 16D, 21, 21D, 42/1 and 42/1D. I have lobbied with no success for them to expand that. The 45 would be the first step no brainer.

<< <i>Only date I've seen PCGS/NGC certify as FB in AU is the '16-D. >>

NGC will designate any Merc date/mm as FB in AU grade that merits the designation. Not only will they, but they have graded at least one AU FB example of most date/mm.

I have no idea why PCGS wouldn't apply the FSB designation to all dates where it is merited on AU coins.

  • There was an OH PCGS AU58 42/1 Mercury dime that looked FSB but maybe not fully rounded at a show on the weekend. The guy wanted 62 money. Not uncirculated IMO and others. I don't know whether the FSB standard has changed over the years. I was up on the Berlin turnpike in CT last year where Harold Kritzman has a shop. He took credit for the FSB designation, said he came up with the idea.

My recollection of the early standard for full bands regardless of who popularized it was a deep, full split with fully rounded bands on either side. That has apparently changed quite a bit over 30-40 years. I think part of the problem was that there were not enough of the tough dates in choice/gem condition that had that sharp a split. So something had to give.
