I have made numerous suggestions to numismaticcrimes.org that their website include a list of certification numbers of stolen, graded coins. Without this resource there is little that dealers can do to help recover stolen coins.

It could be, but would the risk be worth the reward?

Thats some serious money right there...

Isn't there a way to possibly microdot coinage, possibly on the edge, with this being an identifying mark related to owner, Then a file could be updated with each owners name on a registry as the coin changes hands. Has this idea ever been suggested?

  • Yes the high tech solutions have been suggested but nothing has been done. I have asked private eyes about the problem of theft and they have lots of solutions they recommend in terms of prevention. It's a lot tougher after the theft. Anything melted is going to be hard to identify in terms of place of origin.

What is someone doing with $1M in anything at their home, other than it being the home itself?

Looks like the thief didn't even bother to crack the coins out. Just took them straight to the coin shop.

Think it was their cleaning lady? Wonder how many on the message boards (and how many multiples off these boards) have cleaning folks that see a coin or two laying out once in a while and start scheming? Crime of opportunity by the owner's carelessness.

1000 slabs is ALOT of slabs to carry out of a house, even if they were in blue boxes.

This would be a perfect "crack and stash" scenario if you had the smarts.
