1969 Topps baseball back color variations

Hi, posted this over on net54, but maybe someone here can chime in.

Can anyone shed some light on these? I have about 2500 cards from 1969 that i have gotten from multiple sources, and there are two very distinct back colorations: one is very "hot pink" with bright white background to the stats box, and the other is more of a mauve/orange with a greyer background to the stats box. Both say mfg by t c g. so its not an opc issue.

I haven't checked for sure (and i'm at work so no scans) but i seem to have more of the pinkish ones in the lower series.

Can anyone elaborate on this? are all 564 cards available in both variations?

Checked my batch of 1969's and I saw the same thing. Cannot tell if the high numbers have a different back versus the lower numbers, but there is definitely a different logo on the back with the brighter one's having the card number in a circle that sits inside the "t' with a loop for the Topps logo - higher numbers just have the card number and no large "t' or Topps logo. Will try to post photos later if I can.

Doing this from memory, but I believe the bright pink grapefruit colored backs pretty much belongs to the First Series
where about 50% of the cards issued had these bright backs.
There maybe a few in the Second Series, approx. 10% or so but I don't think much more than that.
This may be because I believe Topps was issuing a few Second Series cards in with the First Series at that time.
By the time you hit the later Series 4-7, that bright back color is completely gone .... or at least that has been my experience.

On a similar note, why is there no color distinction made for the 1959 Topps baseball set, same as w/ 1956 Topps? I admit I haven't bothered to check to see if the same card was available both in white & gray back versions for this set, or if there was only one back color for each card, so that may be the answer. Either way, why the change in card stock during the year?

This of course leads into the same question for 1973-74 OPC Hockey, but I know those are available in both gray and white versions for the same card and am on the side with those who feel there should be a distinction made on the labels, same as what we see now with 1981 OPC baseball.

miwlvrn: 1959 Topps baseball #s 199-286 were issued with either white or gray backs. That's the only series in which a card can be found with both. I haven't looked at the pop report to see whether PSA differentiates on their labels, but it seems like you're saying they don't.
