Results from Oct Group Sub--scans (and words) included

Lots of people sharing their sub results this week, so I thought I would jump on board with my results from the October Group sub that Chad (blee1) put on. First off, a public thank you to Chad for running the sub for our group. This was the second group sub I have taken part in and they have both been run very well. Without further ado, onto the cards:

I am working on a 1961 Fleer BK set in 7 or better. I have purchased some raw cards from eBay over the past year and a half and have subbed some of them with pretty good success. I am generally pretty realistic with my grades. When I sub a card I like to think of what reasonable outcomes could come from the sub. Everything in the scans below was within my "reasonable outcomes" range. I am a little disappointed in the Lovellette 5 as it is actually a sharp card, but there is a slight surface indentation that I knew could drop the card to a 5. That was the first card from this set that failed to get a 6 or higher. On the flip side, I am pretty happy with the Green in 8. The remainder of cards in 7 and 6 are all in line with expectations. I will upgrade my set with the Dukes IA and one of the Greens and the rest of the cards will be sold as they are extras.

As some on here know, I am a big Anthony Davis fan and I have started a PSA 10 collection of his cards (primarily his RC's). Happy to add these three Gems to the mix as they are all cards I didn't have yet. I will update my Anthony Davis thread shortly. I have some more of his cards at PSA now as part of the January Group Sub so hopefully, these cards will be joined by some more 10's in the near futureimage

Well, they can't all be 10's. Not sure what kept this Anthony Davis card out of a 10 holder. Oh well, at least out of the 4 AD cards I submitted this card is the least valuable. So if one was going to fail to get a 10, I'm glad PSA picked this one to be the 9. I will keep this one until I can sub a 10 or find one already graded Gem. The Marino and Roy RC's got the grades I expected. I was very confident in the Marino getting an 8. I had no idea what to expect on the Roy, since I have never subbed a hockey card, but my expectation was anything from a 7 to an 8, so I am happy with the result. I have had both cards since I was a teenager in the 90's.

  • Looks great Steve! Some day down the road I'm going to be all over the 61 set (my kind of set small). Just a question about the 61 set, on the back is it more desirable to have the blue bar next to the border without any white showing? Or does it matter? Thanks

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Nice job on the sub, I love your '61 set. I recently subbed some cards I had from my teenage years in the 90s. Just wanted them slabbed, have another round to send off soon. They're my favorites. I must say, you did a good job keeping them in nm-mt shape all these years and I love the centering on the Marino!

Tim--I am by no means an expert on the subject, however, from building my 1961 set, I feel that you want the white strip on the back of the card. A well centered card T/B that is full size should almost always have the white strip. If the white strip is missing, the card is likely off centered T/B or else the card may measure small (either trimmed or just short from the factory). When I have bought raw cards for this set, I always look for the white stripe, because it helps me know if the card is likely to measure properly. Someone who knows more about the set than me may have a better opinion, but that is my thoughts anyway. If you are a hoops fan, I highly recommend this set. Beautiful colors and design and an incredible checklist. And yes, the fact that it was only 66 cards was the main reason I decided to take on the set. I don't know how baseball set builders can get through 700+ cards.

Doug--Thanks for the kind words. Your auto thread is one of the big inspirations to my posts!

Patrick--When I collected as a teenager I took pretty good care of my cards. Through the years, they have stayed put in their holders so the corners and edges for the cards from most of my teenage collection are generally pretty sharp. I was pretty picky with edges and corners when buying cards back then, unfortunately I wasn't so discerning on centering. I have 5 other Marino cards that are as sharp as this one for corners and edges, but are too OC to bother subbing (they would either get a qualifier or drop a grade or two).

  • Thanks Steve, that is some great info. When I start buying raw low grade cards you will have saved me some heartache with subs to PSA lol.
