Unknowingly bought a fake AU 1895-S Morgan in a fake PCGS holder.
Immediately hand-delivered the coin to PCGS for confirmation.
Wound up getting my money back, so my story is a relatively good bad story.
    When in doubt, don't.

Had to cancel a sale. He could not tell it wasn't a proof.

My worst story is actually from yesterday. I won a peace dollar for a very cheap price, and the seller refunded my money within 15 minutes, and said that he can't ship for free. He gave me no option to pay for shipping, and all of his other listings offer free shipping. I left a negative feedback (only have left 6 negs out of the last 1000 feedbacks I have left for sellers). He spent the next 6 hours sending me messages including profanity and what I perceive to be veiled threats. Had to call ebay 3 times for them to handle the situation. I didn't respond to any of his 19 messages.

Overall I have had a very good experience using eBay since I first began using it sixteen years ago, in 1999. In that time I have never sold a single item, using eBay only to make purchases. I have a 100% positive feedback rating, for what that is worth, with typical comments reading “Fast payment” or something similar. However, I once received a negative feedback, in retaliation for the only negative feedback that I have ever left, from a totally bizarre seller.

I had purchased a half dime from a new (to me) seller, with whom I had never done business before. He had a very good feedback rating, and belonged to eBay’s “Square Deal” seller’s program, obligating him to abide by third party arbitration in the event of a dispute. Once I was informed that I was the high bidder, I immediately mailed a USPS postal money order (this was before the days of Paypal) to cover the cost of the half dime plus postage, and waited to receive my new purchase. A week went by with no coin, so I emailed the seller but received no response. I sent another inquiry, and another week went by with no coin and still no response. I emailed him a third time, outlining my concerns, and told him that if I did not hear back from him within 3 or 4 days stating the reasons why I had not received the coin, I would have no choice but to leave a negative feedback and to contact eBay’s resolution people. I even offered him the option to either send me the coin or to refund the money I had sent; the choice was his. I waited the specified number of days but received no response and no coin. I then left him a ‘negative’ feedback, carefully worded to present only the facts, without any libelous comments. Then, and only then, did the seller ‘respond’ with a negative feedback of his own.

I contacted the eBay resolution team, and they responded quickly by phone, asking for the facts. They said that they would then contact the seller to get his side of the story, and then make a decision. I shortly received a return phone call from eBay, saying that they had talked with the seller, he admitted receiving the payment, and admitted that he had not sent the coin. When asked why he had not mailed the coin he stated “When the buyer mailed his payment to me, he had used such beautiful stationery I was so stunned, I simply forgot to mail him the coin”. That was his actual comment! He did finally mail the half dime, and eBay removed both negative feedback comments. I cannot help but think that they should have kept the negative feedback that I had left for the seller, as it was well deserved.

I won an 1875cc 20cent in AU/Unc for a VERY good price. I paid for it and in less than just a few hours it was "stolen". I offered to help by helping with any police report but then radio silence. First and only negative I have left.

Another item I won most recently: it was shipped and I thought it was lost. I tried to contact the seller about 8 times, I even filed a claim with ebay and still nothing from the seller. The item finally showed but I had to give him a 1 star for communication as I could not give him a negative star.

I've told this one here before. A buyer asked me not to leave any feedback for him, positive or negative. (Back when sellers could leave feedback on buyers)

A few days later, I was leaving feedback for multiple items and included positive feedback for him.

The next day I received a scathing message from him, completely freaking out about the feedback I had left. He told me I was a horrible person and seller, who didn't care about his customers at all (I had about 600 transactions at the time, and have never received a negative).

So, that's the time on eBay I got screamed at for leaving someone positive feedback image.

My worst experience was receiving a letter demanding that I pay 2k I owed on my new "pay later" or whatever it is called.

I called to learn more, but since I did not know the PIN on the new account, since I had not created it. It was scary that the account was established using my address and last 4 #s of my SSN.

That was years ago - I never heard another word.

    mine's not bad

buyer wanted a refund on a pr69 first spouse because a small area on the holder's lens had a ballpoint pen tip sized defect. (1mm) I tried polishing it out but it was too deep. I resold it anyway no problems.

    Comparatively not a big deal.

Just had one happen today. I'm helping a dealer friend of mine disperse a hoard of rolls of various different 1972 doubled die Lincoln cents. The hoard contained 12 die 4 coins, and we've been selling them off gradually. We had one end on 1/25, and we promptly shipped it via registered mail (our cost around $25, we offered free shipping on the listing). This morning the buyer asked for a refund because he 'didn't need it anymore', then followed up a couple hours later saying the coin had spots that weren't visible in the photo.

Of course we said no problem on the refund, and the coin will supposedly be sent back today... if he didn't really need the coin we could've cancelled the sale, made a second chance offer or relisted it, and saved $25 in registered mail costs.

Buying 500 shares of it in 1998 and selling 8 days later for a 20% profit. It proceeded to basically go from $40 a share to $700 in the next 5 years.

I probably have a few but what comes to mind now is I sold a PS3 Soccer game once and got a negative feedback saying "It's boring"

I replied that "Soccer just is an inherently boring game"

eBay removed the feedback and eventually NAUR'd the buyer.

Seems a forum member once got a negative after selling a half dime. Neg was because the coin was so small.

20 years ago, I thought I cherry picked a raw 1953-S Franklin half dollar for $85. The seller had several listed along with other coins. When I received it, I anxiously opened the bubble mailer and slid the gem BU half out...it came out date up, yup 1953...I flipped it over to see the S and gazed upon the barely visible bell lines. Dang!

Oh well, it was a shot in the dark. I went back to the e-bay auction to leave feed back when I noticed the coin in the auction did not have a nick near the bell lines like mine did. Upon closer examination, there were several pick-up points that did not match. I went through his feed back and found the coin I had (or close to) and that buyer paid about $65 for theirs. I contacted the seller about this and I got a nice reply that his office people sent me the wrong lot number and offered me a refund if I sent the coin back.

I asked him if he could contact the other buyer to see if they would return their coin, you know, maybe switch them out but I never heard from them again, so I let it rest. Someone out there got a nice 53-S with possible FBs for a song.

Recently had a seller block me because I gave him a "4" for communication instead of a "5." I paid within an hour of the sale ending. He didn't contact me after the sale, didn't mark the item as shipped, and didn't use USPS tracking -- in other words I had no way to know whether he ever shipped the item and he didn't acknowledge my payment. The item arrived in slightly longer than average time, and I thought he could've done better. Somehow, I guess because I was the only feedback he had received in awhile, he knew based on his Seller Dashboard that I had given him less than the overall "5" he thought he deserved so he messaged me to ask for feedback, i.e. what could he have done better. So, having done business with him before and thinking he was sincere, I told him. Well, that was a mistake because he promptly replied with "As far as I'm concerned giving me less than five stars is malicious. I don't need your business and have added you to my blocked bidder list." image

Well, I'm disappointed that I am no longer welcome to bid on his auctions. Oh, did I mention that he is a VERY prominent numismatist? Please don't ask who it is because I'm not vindictive and won't "out" him either publicly or privately. It just goes to show though that you never know when you're going to push someone's wrong button. image

Like Mr. HalfDime, my worst transaction was also on a half dime. I bought a beautiful 1840, With Drapery H10c that looked MS63, raw, for about $300. The seller sent me a cleaned, nasty AU 1840 No Drapery half dime. There was no way they could argue that it was the same coin, now was there? When I emailed, the guy on the other end said, "well send it back then- it's not rocket science." image Don't enjoy getting called out on your fraud, huh buddy? Well, I got my money back after the seller told me he was going on vacation for 6 weeks and would refund it when he got back.

Flash forward to this past year, I bought a 3-cent silver that looked nice and original, and received a harshly cleaned piece of junk. Photo was deliberately manipulated (lighting, tilt angle) to mask the hairlines and make the coin look more toned than it was. Went to return it, and guess what? Same exact outfit in Florida! Changed their seller name after they got a bad reputation.

Got my money back in both cases, but lost money on shipping, and I had to fight for it.
