Bought my first coin ever from Legend

I'm not much of a retail buyer, preferring to compete with dealers at auctions and make their lives a living hell (), but I could not pass up this 1912 proof Barber quarter (PR65, CAC) on Legend's site tonight. It's a really nice match to my beloved 1910 in PR66. So I paid them a little over the going rate for these wonderful proof Type coins.
The funny part was that the description said, "the last one of these sold for $### in June of 2014, and it was not nearly as pretty as this piece!" When I went to look at that auction, it was a really, really, dark photo of the same exact coin in a different holder. The auction photo was so dark and unrecognizable that Legend's staff didn't even know it was the same coin. It was eventually recognizable (decipherable?) from the darker toning patches on the top of the shield.
So I spotted them a 10% profit over the auction price and bought it. Not sure I would have bid on the coin in the auction, though. I like to photograph my coins during the daylight hours, personally. Good business model: buy great coins with crappy auction photos and take better pictures.
Now who wants to see me put together a whole set of these with this type of toning? Sounds like a good 10-year project to me.

Now that's a hoot. It just goes to show that recycling is alive and well in the coin industry. There's lots of gem toned Barber proof quarters out there. Be patient and they'll come your way. There are probably too many Barber proofs for the type collectors that need them. So you're wise to stick to the top 10-20% or so with exceptional appeal. In PF65-66 grade I think you could do it in a lot less than 10 years, possibly even in 2-5 years without sacrificing quality/toning one bit.
I love the MS68 98o BQ they have listed.
In another life.
Ron... Great pair of Quarters... I really love the 1910.
It's a great set to assemble. Finding mated coins won't be
all that easy, but the end result will be magnificent !

I have bought a few coins from Legend over the past year and have been very happy will all of them. All nicely toned proof cents. Their pricing is very fair on nicely toned coins.
OINK
But sumpin else is on the way.
Re-reading my own post, I didn't mean to insinuate that Legend knew it was the same coin in the auction. I feel really bad if it sounded that way. Legend is obviously one of the top outlets for premium coins, and they have a great eye for PQ material. I just found it funny that the auction pictures were so incredibly dark that a staff of experienced numismatists didn't even recognize the coin. I would have been really ticked if I was the consignor of this coin, and it was sold with a photo that was unrecognizable. Some of that auction houses coin photos are great, but not this one. I'm sure it sold for less than fair market last June, and that's why Legend was able to sell it to me, a self-proclaimed cheapskate, for a price I could live with.
<< <i>just ten years? You sure? >>
Yeh, maybe it should take 15 years. I need rhedden to spend a lonnnnng time away from Seated quarters, if ya know what I mean.

LOL. Seated quarters are my personal version of crack- once you start, you can't stay away.
