EBAY SCAMMER over $200k : UPDATE!

Hi all,

First of all, thanks for all the supportive messages on this thread and via private messages. I am happy to report that ebay has refunded all of my purchases from "tpqcollect," in excess of $20,000.

I must say, I have been really impressed overall by how ebay handled the situation. In my mind, this really put their "money back guarantee" to the test (the $200,000 test) and I think ebay passed with flying colors. I'm curious the extent to which both ebay and law enforcement goes after this guy and I really do hope they make an example of him.

I hope there's an interesting epilogue to this story… time will tell.

I'm glad to hear eBay Inc. will be using their legal staff to go after this guy instead of you having to fight it. image

I am happy for you as you did not actually want some printed "posters" from this seller and it goes to show that Ebay may not be as bad as some people constantly say.

  • I don't envy them having to stay on top off all the potential scams from both buyers and sellers! They must have insurance to cover all eventualities.

This was a huge scam on the order of a class action law suit. Ebay would have been foolish to let this fester and not cover it. If this were 50 separate sellers with 50 different buyers, the results would likely not have been so positive for the sellers. Glad to see the OP get covered for the full amount.

I'm sorry you are so bummed on ebay and the whole coin dealer business as a whole. I have been following your comments and must say you seemed to have found all the bad apples! I spent over 100K on ebay in the last year with probably at best a 1% return dollar wise. I also sold well over 100K with the same results as to returns.

I for one think ebay has made leaps and bounds since I stopped using them in 2000. I started back a couple of years ago. Ebay in my STRONG opinion has made it a much safer place to buy....perhaps even on par with Heritage since a sh*tty pic on Heritage does not constitute a reason for return!

    Strongly agree as well!
  • "The good old days of ebay"?? Some sellers did ok, selling substandard uncertified and questionable 3rd party holder material when buyers got burned when duped and sellers could kick back against buyers with feedback too. Ebay charges were less but you get what you pay for. I avoided ebay like the plague in those days with the overpromotion and false advertising. That still exists but we are more in the 21st century than before. Ebay has buyers back now.

    Great news!!

Ebay is not as good as it was many years ago, but it's still a very opportunistic place to buy and sell for the knowledgeable and diligent consumer.

image Glad you were made whole, but there is a flip side to feepay as witnessed by this thread:

feepay forces seller to pony up $500.00 shipping fee for buyer's admitted error.

After reading that thread you'll get a glimpse into why so many good sellers are so cynical about doing business there.

For buyers, at least, ebay is a very safe venue to buy coins from.

There has been a rather positive update to that post.
  • The bottom line on ripped off buyers or sellers: if you don't care and demand your money back, no one does.
