Earl Morrall no longer #1

Earl's missing a wide open Jimmy Orr in Super Bowl lll can no longer be considered the worst gaffe in the game's history.

I thought it was Jackie Smith dropping a pass in the end zone, or Garo Yepremian trying to throw the pass on the muffed field goal attempt in Super Bowl VII.

    Doncha worry amigo.
True, Jackie's drop was monumental but in truth, if Earl had seen a wide-open Orr, and he scored, AND the Colts had won, there's no telling what would've happened to the AFL's momentum afterwards.

The Jets winning Super Bowl III really had nothing to do with the merger. It may have helped legitimized
the quality of the AFL product and franchises, but the merger would have still taken place with a Jets loss.

The merger was about NFL and AFL owners getting tired of bidding each other up
for the rights to sign the hottest rookies entering the leagues and also trying to get the AFL owners to lay off from going
after signing the veteran stars off of NFL rosters. Merger talks began in 1966 before Super Bowl 1.
Salaries were escalating at an alarming rate. It was in the best interests of both sides to merge to try to hold down costs,
    namely player salaries.

Like almost everything, it was about money and controlling who was getting it and who wasn't.

How about Joe Theisman throwing a TD pass to Jack Squirek?
