Dave Bergman Passes away at 61

Former Yankee,Giant and Tiger reserve first basemen paced away today at the young age of 61 from Cancer.Besides being a very good reserve and pinch hitter he was a great friendly man outside the game.I had the pleasure to meeting him after he retired as he managed in Federation Baseball and my team played against his.He was an important member the 1984 World Champion Tigers.

    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • I was a spring training bat boy for the Tigers in the late 80's, and I'll never forget having Dave stand with me when he was in the hole and talk about what the pitcher was trying to do in certain situations. A truly nice guy.

R.I.P. I will never forget this at bat he had. Thanks for posting the video.
It was his almost-supernatural at-bat against Jays reliever Roy Lee Jackson on June 4, 1984 that became a magical moment in Tigers lore. Toronto was chasing Detroit for the American League East lead, and the Jays were tied with the Tigers, at 3, in the 10th inning when Bergman arrived at home plate for what would become a seven-minute duel of delicious tension and confrontation.

It ended when, on the 13th pitch, Bergman ripped a Jackson fastball into Tiger Stadium's upper deck for a three-run homer that all but signaled an end to thoughts Toronto might topple a team that became the year's wire-to-wire champion.

Bergie was never a superstar but he gave everything he had and was beloved by Tigers fans for his class and his relationship with the community. Those guys from 84 all have a special place in our hearts. Some like Bergie get one that's just a little more so.
