George III Halfpenny NEWP

This is one I bought at NYINC, but had to be shipped with London, currently raw.

1799 (dated) George III Pattern Halfpenny, Peck 1258, one of the Taylor restrikes after he had purchased a large batch of dies from the Soho mint sale.

Dennis88, Taylor did not appear to keep records of what and when he struck his pieces, but generally 1850's to the 1870's. The mint was sold in 1850, Ralph Heaton buying the presses to move to his mint, and WJ Taylor buying up a bunch of scrap, which just so happened to have many original dies and punches stored in fat. The Soho mint patterns and currency pieces were collected even in those days and Taylor saw an opportunity to make some money. Most of the dies needed some touching up, which Taylor did, unskillfully in many cases. And in many cases Taylor mixed dies, or used the punches to prepare completely new dies, to produce patterns that had never existed during the Soho mint period.

Since Taylor only bought the dies and not the presses with which to strike them, do we know who actually struck the coins from Taylor's dies?

Taylor struck them himself. He was a medalist and had his own presses prior to acquiring the Soho dies.

Included in the dies Taylor received were some of the dies used to strike Conder tokens. So us Conder token collectors have to deal with his restrikes also. They are listed in Dalton and Hamer alongside the original strikes.

Brilliant bit of history I was not familiar with. That is a great coin. An oddly posed portrait of GIII but still a very nice piece.

Nice 1807, coffeyce. I am always looking for better examples of those because they really seemed to take a beating since they were minted.

yes it seems the American and british larger coppers really catch hell hard to find them in great shape

Ah, I have been blissfully ignorant of CICF coming. Now I can be excited since it is reasonably close! I will be collecting some GIII copper there myself hopefully, albeit not at this level. But anyone that has stuff on the more common side and VF+ range, I will be bothering you a bunch!
