Ebay seller trigger happy

I won an auction on the 24th. Today the 27th seller files unpaid claim. He never once in those three days sent me an email. I did get the eBay reminder yesterday but didn't have time to pay yesterday. Keep in mind that I have 4294 feedbacks and all are 100% positive. Nearly all are as a buyer too, with most comments being fast payment.

So after paying I sent email to seller. Telling him I expect card in my PO box with in 3 days or claim will be filled with PayPal.

    My thoughts:

    1. Clearly you are right that the seller is jumping the gun.

    2. It is petty and a tremendous waste of time to get in a "I'll tattle on you ... first!" war.

    3. Buyers should pay immediately for all items, with the exception of waiting to bid on multiple items with the same seller. Why not? Get the eBay phone app - you can check-out when you're stuck at a red light on your way home from work.

#3, not if you've received a combined invoice, you have to go to the website to pay for those. #2, completely agree.

Some sellers have it set as low as 2 days now that unpaid claims are automatically filed, 5-7 days seems more reasonable, but I understand the frustration on the seller side as well w/buyers not paying.

That part is pretty silly. Paypal will look and see that the item has been accepted at the USPS with tracking and wonder what the ^&%$ you're talking about. There are no guarantees on when the item has to be in your possession.

And like someone else said.....pay the guy if you win an item. Who needs four days to click two buttons?

I have never understood why some people wait days to pay for their cards? I mean come on it's not hard or time consuming to you Paypal.

What if sellers waited 3 days to mail your cards after payment? I bet you would not appreciate that.

not saying it hard to pay. but there are times when items end when you are not able to access the internet for various reasons. he did admit to me that he never looked at my feedback. in the past i have gotten emails right after winning, by that i mean with in seconds of closing, from the seller saying that he was going on vacation soon and that if i wanted item quicker paying faster would help make sure items are shipped before they leave. i can fully understand that and appreciate the email. however, never getting any email prior to filling a claim is not cool. i know the paypal claim won't work with tracking it was just a way of showing my frustration that he never either asked first or even looked at my feedback.

so if buyers should pay immediately for everything then sellers should send items immediately as well. which we know will never happen. i dont even have the eBay app on my phone. i have it on my iPad only. with the way people can hack into mobile phones i dont use them for payment type things. that means even mobile banking.

i tend to be quite patient on waiting for items in the mail. normally that means 2 weeks before i send an email asking about an update on shipping. again i send an email before filling a claim.

It was lowered to 2 days a few months back.

Unless it's a pricey item, I don't understand or have much patience beyond 48 hours. I'd open a case at that time. If someone needs more time, I expect them to notify me.

That's rather extreme, imo. If a seller needs the payment that quick, they should set up a BIN with immediate payment required.

Agreed. Won a snipe on a Friday after I'd left for camping w/no cell service and came back to an unpaid case on Sunday (48 hours and 1 minute after the win).

Sellers should wait. Buyers should pay ASAP. Everyone should realize that the other does not know the specifics of the other's circumstances (is the case automated? is the buyer temporarily stranded in a desert?) and avoid taking it all so personally. Everyone should extra especially not become grouchey with each other just because you can and the internet makes it easy. Good luck, boys.

I'm not feeling the relevance of that. You knew you won the item, and you admit that an invoice was sent yesterday. If those things didn't get you to pay, what would an e-mail have done?

In any event, who cares about one case when you have 5,000 feedbacks? Once you pay, you clear the case.

I don't know why some buyers are so gun shy to pay the same day, unless prior arrangements were made with the seller beforehand. If the seller waited to ship the same time it took a buyer to pay, I'm thinking you would find that unacceptable given your ridiculous response to him. Personally, I would not have handled it the way the buyer did, but he is certainly entitled to prompt payment as he defines it.

This is how I operate. I pay right away, but give buyers up to 7 days to pay. If they don't pay I just relist, it's not the end of the world.

Ditto. Never understood why buyers even take a day to pay unless they are bidding on more of my items. If you are on to buy it (or snipe it), you should be on to pay for it.

When I buy a BIN, I pay immediately. When I win an auction or have an offer accepted, I pay the next time I am online, usually every night at least once.

As a seller, I expect the buyers to do the same. Right now, i have a low feedback buyer who sent an offer I accepted Saturday night...they still havent paid. I sent an invoice yesterday, kind of as a reminder, but without it being one. This buyer also has a "positive" of wanting to cancel item right after buying it, so the history is there. These buyers are why sellers "jump the gun" on filing unpaid items, they, quite simply, are tired of these deadbeats not paying (No, I am not referring to the OP).
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I've wondered how many days it actually is in the rules the other way too, for filing an item not received claim. A couple months back I had a buyer win an item and pay immediately, and I shipped the item the same day as payment cleared (like I nearly always do). The next day after the auction ended, he opened a case for "Item Not Received". This was because my mail carrier accidentally scanned the item as delivered to my house when he picked it up, instead of having his scanner set on acceptance instead. So, when clicking on the tracking number, it came up as delivered and no further tracking info was ever eligible to be entered by USPS. The buyer opened the case without even emailing to ask what was up. Can't believe the scanner mistake happened to occur with the one buyer who actually clicked the tracking info immediately. Of course the item was delivered to him within 2 days after he opened the case because it was on its way on time to him in the first place. He then closed the case after we emailed about it and he received it, but I was pretty annoyed for a day or so afterwards that that case opening stays on my performance record. Where I am going with this is, there should be a minimum number of days the buyer has to wait before opening a case for not received. If there is, perhaps it is in the ebay programming somewhere that if an item tracks as having been delivered, it eliminates the minimum days waiting period.

The reason I might wait a few days is because I might win a high priced item during one credit card statement, so I wait (might be a few days) until the next billing period arrives. That gives me an extra month to pay it. And I don't need a lecture on carrying a credit card balance.

The OP purchased the item on the 24th. He could have paid on the 24th, 25th, 26th, or on the 27th prior to the seller either manually or automatically opening an unpaid item case. If I overlooked paying for something for that length of time, I would pay instantly upon receiving the unpaid item notice and apologize profusely to the seller for the delay. The message the OP claims to have sent the seller was unnecessary and obnoxious.

Some buyers are waiting to get paid from other sales. I have a friend who just bought a car on ebay for 27K.
He only had half the money but the deal on the car was too good to pass up.
After a crazy week of listing and selling comics he had raised the money.

Obviously a little more high ticket item but I expect buyers at the lower end are in the same boat - waiting to get paid.

When I buy cards on eBay I only use cash - what I like to call "fun" money. So I have to go to a store like Walgreens and buy a pre-paid card and then load it into my paypal account. If my paypal balance gets too low, it may take me a day to pay if I don't have time to get to the store. I just don't believe in using a credit card to buy baseball cards - too dangerous!

-just giving a plausible reason why a buyer might not pay instantly.
