Blizzard of '15 Rip---if we get +14"

well here is the current generation's blizzard of '78---most recent reports say between 18-28" of snow here in Little Rhody

We all know meteorologists are always wrong. So to test their veracity--and to commemorate the Blizzard of '78 I am going to rip a '71 BB rack pack.

But ONLY IF--we get more than 14" of snow. I have a ruler set at 14" -- and we are supposed to get 10-15" between midnight and 8 AM.

So stay tuned.

let's figure 2 PM for the rip--I'll need time to get the snow cleared-----

I'll post a pic as soon as I can of the rack

But either way good luck with the rip image

  • Manny, you have 14" sticking out of the tape measure, but the size of the tape measure is 2 or 3 inches itself, so you're already past the 14". image

Please do not insult meteorologists. I'm a research meteorologist for 30 years. I'm in the same building with the Norman Natioal Weather Service Offuce and the Storm Prediction Center. I work with a bunch of these great people, especially in the spring for tornado season.

In my 30 years, I've seen the computer capabilities change dramatically, with forecasting improving likewise. The models aren't perfect, but are getting there.

I know some people are complaining that places didn't get the amounts of snow predicted. Just remember that in the past, a big snow storm may not have been predicted.

I'm proud to be a meteorologist!

jeeez Kevin--didn't mean to insult you. Little tougher skin perhaps--all in fun

here is the latest---this time the meteorologists were dead on (hows that Kevin?) And yes Dr. Fong you are correct I was there anyway

    image

the bigger problem is that I forgot this rack--pictured below--has a new GAI slab

how the heck to I pry this baby out????

    Hi...

The problem is that this is an attitude that operational meteorologists have had to fight over the years.

Next time, use a smiley, and all will be fine.

Seriously, how do you crack that holder? It's an inch thick. Seems like you'd need some heavy duty equipment.
  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
GAI slabs are the toughest to crack.

Be very carefull. There is a high probability of flying pieces. If you have goggles for outdoor work I would wear them.

    Good luck.

  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,738 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've never owned a rack in the newer designed GAI holder. The old ones, which were much larger, were soft plastic and very easy to cut open, like the regular pack holders.

When I got this one I was going to crack it since none of my other racks are encapsulated...then I looked at it carefully and decided not to. image

Why not?? Inquiring minds want to know!

I prefer my racks raw, as well~the holders tend to curl the edges over time inside the holder.

Not sure if 14" is the snowfall or the circumference of the sack it takes to rip a 71 rack.

Can't wait. All the best Manny!

You can't see the holder in the pic, but it's in one of those new GAI monstrosities...I just didn't think I could handle it!
  • flatfoot816flatfoot816 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭
hi gents--sorry about the delay. No cold feet--well my feet are actually VERY cold--but that's from moving 2 feet of snow from a huge driveway. I am still clearing snow here--trying to get it done before dark.

But the holder is a big problem--it is very thick and I am concerned about damaging the rack. When I settle down after a hot shower--I'll see it it will come apart. If not, I'll have to substitute the rack for other stuff.

There will be ripping here tonite!!!

    OK--all done clearing up.

I could not figure a way to open the really thick GAI slab. It's solid plastic. Only way was to try and force a screwdriver in a side and bang it with a hammer. Frankly I did not want to chance that with such a rack.

So------I reached into my Blizzard bag and came up with---

    image

Not as sexy as the '71--but nothing to sneeze at. That is a Desert Shield pack--1 of the 4 I got in the group rip a while back

So--I am gonna have a snack and start the rip between 730-8.

Note the Jerry Grote card on the '79 rack--just for you Tim

HAHAHA, I find it very ironic that a red sox fan pulled a bucky fing dent from the 1975 rak, would be the best if from a 78 rak though. Have 3 world championships eased the pain??

    thanks for sharing, John
