1983 Team Canada Mario Lemieux

Picked up an unopened set of these. 1983 Team Canada World Junior set. The price was good but I knew it was a roll of the dice. About half the cards had issues and the worst one turned out to be the Yzerman but the Lemieux looks really nice.

Here's the POP report for this set

Some info on the set from Beckett's website

This 21-card set features Canada's 1983 National Junior Team. The cards measure approximately 3 1/2" by 5" and feature on the fronts either color posed action shots or close-up photos, shot against a blue background. On a red card face, the photos are enclosed by white borders, and the upper right corner of the picture is cut off to allow space for the team logo. The backs are blank and the unnumbered cards are checklisted below in alphabetical order. The set includes early cards of Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Mike Vernon, Dave Andreychuk, and Pat Verbeek. Three other players on the team who were not at the photo session and therefore not represented in the set are Paul Boutillier, Marc Habscheid, and Brad Shaw. A large team card (approximately 5" by 10 1/4") featuring all the players (except Marc Habscheid) and coaches was also produced. A two-thirds size (measuring approximately 5" by 7 1/4") team card entitled Celebration '82 with Troy Murray holding the Championship Plate as well as a (7 1/4" by 10 1/4") '82 team card were also produced.

  • Nice Lemieux! I'm a fan of this set! I have a few cards from it, but this is my favorite.

    That Lemieux is killer!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

image A hockey player with two first names. How odd is that?

  • Just one of several NHLer's I collect. I was a Rangers fan in my early exposure to hockey and he was a slick skating, scoring defenseman. Plus all of my friends liked/collected Gretzky or Lemieux or *insert any mid to late 80's star here* and I was always one to be different.

Nice pickup. Definitely tough set to crack open and submit. I once got super lucky and bought a sealed set opened it and it yielded a PSA 9 Mario & Yzerman from a sub. First Mike Vernon card and a XRC Andreychuk too. No PSA 10 yet for the Yzerman I have always wanted to cross this Lemieux below to PSA. Not a touch of red missing on the corners or edges: image

Wow, that does look like it has a shot at a PSA 10. I'm going to be sending in about a half dozen of these cards including the Lemieux to PSA. Like I said the Yzerman I got looks great a first glance but has a few dents that would bring it down to 4 or lower.
