Sales and auctions seem slow this time of the year

Guess it is people being busy with the holidays/poor weather/no baseball being played right now, but does it seem very slow for sales at the moment? Checking on Ebay and looking at recent sales on VCP and not a lot of auctions or items being offered right now. Have only seen one Aaron rookie sold since October in a PSA 8, one Clemente in PSA 8 in the same time period, very few high end Mantle cards.... Funny thing is most of these high end cards have been sold via a PWCC auction which has not had an auction during this same time period. Seems as if over the past year to 18 months they have had a good run and have really grown their business and are commanding high prices. Hope we see some strong offerings in the near future.

I have also noticed that gorgeous cards are surfacing less and less often for sale. Bottom line, collectors aren't looking to part with their premium pieces. The huge demand seen in the last year especially comes in large part from collectors, and when a piece winds up in some collections, it stays there for a very, very long time. Anecdotally, there are several cards I've been asking certain collectors to sell over the years, but they ain't selling. Similarly I've had numerous inquiries on various cards that just aren't for sale. There are only so many gorgeous cards to go around and collectors often will snap up multiple copies of a great beauty that's rarely centered or seen with stellar eye appeal. Basically, collectors building and enjoying their collections are the lifeblood of the hobby, and they've been very active in the last year or so, which ironically can mean many cards have now moved into new long term if not permanent homes.

I agree that more people are buying and holding right now, and funny thing is with the card and stock market the way it is now is the time to sell cards to make money. If the stock market corrects or the bull slows some folks are forced to sell assets like boats, cars, cards... to pay for expenses.

The other thing that helps sales is when collectors upgrade a card from an 8 to an 8.5 or 9 and sell the lower grade card to help finance the purchase. I know I have some of that coming up soon to cover some purchases/potential purchases.

I will be curious to see what items PWCC has in their first auction of the year next week to see if the 2 month hiatus for the holidays has resulted in a stockpiling of items.
  • I am a tiny fish in a big pond, but my small sample size read of the market has been this: sales slow significantly within 1 week of Christmas and for about 2 weeks afterward. My assumption is that money is spent before the holiday and consumers wait to replenish their disposable funds afterward. I have found sales from the 2nd week of January forward to be solid.
