When was the Hallmark grading service in operation?

Why did it cease operation?

It's slab, in modified form, continued in use by PCI and DGS, but those were different companies.

Hallmark was owned by Q. David Bowers. Contact him. He is very approachable and friendly.

Hallmark was owned by a consortium of dealers, most of which were silent partners. Bowers and Lee Bellisario of Woburn, Massachusetts were the front men.

I know I have an 09 VDB graded MS64 Red in an original Hallmark holder somewhere, that
I acquired around 1989....but it may have been slabbed well before then.

Hallmark evolved into Photo Certified Coin Institute when Louis Revels purchased Hallmark. The PCCI capsules (slabs) actually used the acronym PCI in the insert graphics when they included a photo cache with the horizontally rectangular (landscape) oriented encapsulated coin, before the transformation to the vertically rectangular( portrait) oriented PCI slab with the microprinted green border over white insert.
