On a related topic, I had an XF 1879 quarter that had a "ghost" O in the mint mark position. It was the size of the last used mm size from 1860...the large O. Never could figure out what it was. It had definite height to the "O" but only a fraction of a real mint mark. The coin didn't appear to be played with as it was a very original XF coin with deep gray patina.
