Bought my first football cards today.

I've been wanting to get into football cards ever since I started watching games regularly just a few years ago. There are some unopened 80s boxes I want to add to my collection, in good time, but since I didn't watch football back then those boxes will be more because I feel like they're "must haves" for any football collection.

So, I bought a couple Topps boxes at Target today. Have heard a lot about modern Topps cards and thought I'd give these a shot.

I opened the regular Topps cards and it was nice to see players I've watched on TV, but I wasn't really impressed with the cards and they just seemed boring.

Then came the Chrome and I'm blown away! Where have I been? These cards are amazing looking. I found myself going through these cards much slower, really looking them over and reminiscing games from this season.

I've found the football to collect. The focus is going to be to build a raw set of the regular Chrome cards (from packs) and be happy with whatever special cards come my way. I don't want to get caught up in trying to put refractor purple this and that xfractor sp gold sets together.

Questions for collectors:

What's the best way to store these? Are album pages out of the question?

Does Chrome come in larger boxes?

And what other companies would you recommend for someone who likes Chrome?

Thanks in advance,

Patrick

The price on the current Topps Chrome Football continues to drop and there was another thread here about it not being a good product

I wonder if the blasters are better bang for your buck. I bought quite a few blasters of last year's and did really well value wise.
  • I like this post because the OP simply likes the cards without worrying whether he's getting a sufficient return or whether they are over-produced. While I'm not insensitive to the idea of getting value out of a box, it's always seemed like a dumb reason not to collect a set just because it was over-produced. If you like the cards, whether because of their design or of the tingly nostalgia feelings you get, I say collect the damn cards. Regardless of your feelings about this particular release, the cards are really attractive. I love me the hell out of some 1989 Topps baseball and I'm happy to have one set out of 500 million.

I prefer penny sleeves in a set box for chromes. They tend to stick to album pages or each other making them difficult to remove/separate, especially in a humid environment.

Bowman, also check out the Topps Finest and Bowman's Best issues of years past.

I also love Chrome and always have despite its issues this year. From what I understand, though, Chrome may not be around beyond 2015 as Panini will have exclusive NFL rights to something or other.

By the way, I definitely would recommend the Panini Prizm set to the Chrome lover.

Is it dumb to buy blasters instead of hobby if the bang for your buck is better?

I don't collect modern cards, but those are some good looking shiny cards.
I'd like to see what the backs look like on those Chrome cards.

I will echo what others have said: Bowman Chrome and Panini Prizm are pretty good, and Topps Finest and Bowmans Best for older issues.
