Gretzky RC

Hey not sure i will get this to actually show a picture so any help appreciated!

I am debating on cracking and sending this in and just wanted some opinions on what the major flaw is on this. I have compared with many that do not look quit as appealing that hold a higher grade. Im wondering if the white spot on the right border is what the problem is? Im big on centering of the card and oil dot, and prefer the first run version which this has all of. Just looking for some feedback on if id be better off selling this and just putting toward the PSA 8 or if its worth a crack out. Thanks!

Hard to tell from those camera shots, high res scans would be much better. From what I can see the card is centered high, there appears to be some tilt and the bottom left corner has a touch. Appears to be an issue with the top edge as well, this is a Topps card I believe and you were probably docked for that edge.

That is a nice card. Remember the cardinal rule of TPGs, buy the card not the holder. I assume it is a PSA 7, so I would not crack it out and would send it in for review instead. You would be hard pressed to find another that fits the parameters that you are looking for.

As for the absence of a rough cut, this one looks to have been cut with a new blade at the time of printing.
• Crap the actual picture is much better than clicking on that link.
Is there a how to on posting pictures? I thought there was but searched and couldnt find it.
It is an OPC and does have a rough cut just hard to see from that.

• Yea it is a 7, forgot to mention that.

You might have better luck posting pictures from a photobucket account (it's free). I'm not sure how to post a pic using snapfish. You need to find the photo link that ends in .jpg.

.....replace this section with the .jpg link.... (also remove the spaces after "IMG"
• I just right-clicked on each image and chose "copy image URL", then clicked the photo icon above the text box and pasted it in. OP, there are a million previous threads on this. Best way to learn how is to do a forum search.

As for the card, I am surprised by the lack of rough cut. You don't see many missing the rough cut in PSA holders. I usually see the non-rough cuts in Beckett holders. I've read that it's not uncommon for PSA to not grade the non-rough cut because they deem them to be sheet cut. For that reason, I would not crack & submit. I would only do a review.

That said, centering and corners look strong. Certainly a candidate for an 8.

That's a beautiful card. I wouldn't crack it out. Perhaps a review for, possibly, a 0.5 bump? Worth that for the superb all around centering.

And it's a keeper. Don't get rid of it!!!

• Thanks for getting the pic up. Ill try to figure this out.

There is a rough cut, more so on the top and bottom vs. the sides.

I think ill try the review and see. Seems in the past i have read people having better luck cracking out but ill can try a review first.

In general, I think you're correct that people have been more successful with the crack & resub. However, there are some cards that I would extra careful with and go the safer route by doing a "review". The '79 OPC Gretzky is certainly one of those cards, along with other heavy counterfeited cards. Based on what I can see in the photos, I think you have strong 8 candidate.

There's a theory that the blue lines/first print run cards have the smoothest edges because they were not subject to dull blades. I don't know if this is true, but it certainly makes sense as most blue line '79s I've seen (not all but most) have smooth edges.

I think the theory makes sense, but I don't necessarily buy it. That assumes that new blades were used at the beginning of the print run....who knows when/if they ever changed blades between running 1978 cards and their baseball/other card runs. I've just read some nightmare stories of folks cracking a BGS or KSA card only to have PSA deem it sheet cut and ungradable. Given that risk, I wouldn't crack a smooth edge card for a resub.
And I'm not knocking the smooth edges. The one in my collection has edges similar to those in OP and is graded by PSA.
• Is it standard for this card to have either all rough edges or all smooth, not a mix of the 2?
