OPC vs Topps, Just looked up the number of sales on a

1978 Eddie Murray.

13 topps have sold in the last month or two

1 opc has sold in that same time

Obviously more people are interested in the topps, but at the same time there are a lot less of the opc's than the topps. about 25% of the topps cards sold for more than the opc also.

You would think that relative scarcity of the OPC would drive the prices alot higher than the topps, but it doesn't.

Question Should it? Any thoughts?

    OPC is very undervalued, imo.

Just not enough interest to warrant the prices it deserves, imo.

That is due in large part to the registry. Not one person has a 78 OPC set at better than 95% completion. Compare that to 78 Topps, where 16 registry sets are at 95% or better.

ETA: There are also 108 78 Topps sets registered vs 15 for 78 OPC.

  • I love everything about OPC cards. the rarity, the ragged cuts, the brighter backs, etc.

Waiting patiently for PSA to add player sets. I think that would help tremendously, but until then I sure do love picking up high quality 9's and 10's w/ lower pops at the fraction of the cost of their Topps counterparts.

That post reminds me of a long-ago active member named Bob who used to post under user name rbdjr1 or something like that. He made a valiant effort to corner the vintage OPC baseball market and amassed quite a collection, believing that the cards were seriously undervlaued because of their degree of difficulty in higher grade. He sold off all of the cards along with his collection afterwards, though. Anyone know what happened to Bob? This was probably about 6-7 years ago..

I am just trying to complete my OPC Cardinals run as cheap as I can! I have noticed the prices have gone up a bit over the last couple years. The 1974 OPC are really tough!

Tell me about it! I opened a few of those packs several months back and can attest to just how difficult it is to find one card out of eight in better than NM cobdition, LOL..

Speaking of Cardinals, this was one of the nicer cards I sent in from the packs I opened. It appears slightly tilted, but is sitting a bit askew in the holder:

That's a pretty sweet looking Schoendienst! I am pretty close to having the 74 Cardinals set complete, still looking for a reasonably priced Torre in ok shape.

I think it's just pre-1980. I believe OPC sells for more than Topps after 1980. My guess is that the generation of kids that grew up with 3-5 card manufacturers don't have the brand loyalty older generations do.

tim i believe that bob was the guy who almost helped me complete my 1973 opc set at the time i know me and you were both working on one and i was trying to do a 1971 but it just got to tuff and also sold off most of my 1973 about 3 years ago

My take on the 1960's-1970's OPC cards selling for less than they "should" is because there are so few high end cards out there collectors/investors tend to ignore them.

People seem to be buying Topps cards in 9's and 10's that are not low pop, but ignore opc that are MUCH lower pop.

The demand isn't there. Low supply only equals value if there is demand.

Love the OPC baseball from this era. It is ridiculously scarce. I was gobbling up Ozzie, Eddie Murray, Brett, Schmidt rc's all day long waiting for that inevitable day when the rest of the collectors in the world would wake up and realize how cool and scarce they were. That day never came. I sold. Might have broken even. At the end of the day, there just isn't a demand. The 1980's is different because topps went nuts producing while OPC stayed fairly scarce

I obtained this one from a previous group break and even though it is tilted and off-center, I think it is gorgeous.

Overall, I think some of the undervalue comes from the overvalue of the topps cards. The registry certainly adds to this.

A 1975 Pete Rose PSA 9 sells for

    Topps - $150

    OPC - $350

Lots of Pete Rose collectors working on the master sets and just Pete Rose collectors.

Like another member said 106 1978 Topps sets and 15 OPC sets being collected, thus the Murray OPC sells for less and a lot less frequently and there aren't as many Murray fans as Rose.

My opinion, and Im a little biased because I collect OPC, still resides in the scarcity factor, especially with superstar cards. Isn't this the main reason the Honus card sells for so much, scarcity. None of the rest of cards go for millions thus it's not just due to his popularity.

75 OPC is definitely an exception. A PSA 9 75 OPC Brett will command more than a PSA 9 Topps version, too.
