Anyone in need of a FREE 1 year subscription to Startiger.com?? Contest Over! WINNER ANNOUNCED!

This month I won two 1 year subscriptions to startiger and of course I have started using one. Well I want to give away the other to a member of this board! All I want is to see your VERY FIRST sports items, whether it be a card, photo, index, sports coin, packs etc, that you had slabbed! No matter what company you used! The best one that catches my attention wins! This is NOT a joke either. If you are on startiger you can look to see that I was one of the winners. I will choose the winner sometime tomorrow night and PM you. I will start off first, oh and a brief history of why it was your first please!

I am not sure how long I had this card before I got it slabbed, but whenever I found it I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Took it to a local card shop and asked if they knew anything about it. No of course, but he told me I should get it graded. FIRST time I had ever heard the term and that was in 2008! I know it's not a valuable card but it's my first and I'm not letting it go! image

My first slabbed card was a 1953-54 Parkhurst Gordie Howe #50 which I sent off to SGC.

I got it raw in 1987, slabbed it in the late 90's and ended up selling it in 2014 to a sports card shop in Canada on eBay.

I did a few shows in the 90's and thought it would grade high. So I sent it in and like everyone else, who first submits their cards, I started to learn about graded cards.

I got the graded card bug in 2005 and started to chase 1988 Maxx PSA 10's.

All of my submissions have come from group autograph submissions on this board (both red and blue flip).

Here's one of my favorites from my first submission a few years back:

    Thanks for the contest!

This was part of my first submission - I remember at the time, I was always a fan of vintage cards, but was more a collector of mid-grade cards, since I didn't think it was worth such a premium for a NM card vs. a VG card. This was the first high-grade vintage card I remember buying raw, and immediately submitted to this new PSA company to see what they thought.

I since had it re-slabbed since I hated the early font, but always have enjoyed this Thorpe card.

The the first card I submitted to get slabbed. I had purchased many in the past before it, but this was the first that I actually sent in after I got a PSA membership about a year ago

In September of 2007 I subbed my first cards and this was one of them... I ended up getting a 9 later (only one to date) so I am unsure if I will keep it. I also had a Hulk Hogan PSA 9 from the wrestling all stars in that sub. Quite the winning sub for a first one as that Hogan is a $2500 card now...Anyways, Dan Gable is my hero and his first trading card I acquired of his was through a cereal box in 1983 or 84 (Greatest Olympians) when I was a kid and I was hooked. I discovered this 1972 card from Italy around 2001 as the wrestling museum and Dan Gable himself thought the Campioni Dello Sport from 1973-74 was his rookie....I ended up telling Mr. Gable via a TTM auto request that I had a acquired more of his rookie card and that I would be honored to give him a copy when I went to the NCAA National Wrestling Tournament. I have seen video of Dan's house and he collects his trading cards for his trophy room so I knew it had a rightful place....once his daughter Annie emailed me via ebay and did not win the card of her dad she wanted to give him and verified through Dan's wife (her mom) that he did not know it existed.....To make a long story short I did give Mr. Gable his rookie card at an autograph signing at the national wrestling tournament and he was quite happy.

    image

I also found out that one of my signed rookies found its way to the cover of a book! I was sitting before the finals and Mr. Gable was walking the concourse area. I waved him down and he stopped although he clearly was in a hurry. He signed a rushed signature that I eventually upgraded from, but that card made a bit of history by being published! Here is a copy of the Gable rookie on the cover of a book.

Regardless of the contest, I like the idea of showing your first submission. This was mine and it truly set the hook on me! The highlight was the 1986 Procards Greg Maddux PSA 10. I have been a fan of Greg Maddux since his early days, but this card had always eluded me. I was able to track someone down through a Google search that I heard had the Minor League team sets at one point. He had one last team set left and decided to sell it to me luckily. image I learned a lot from this sub, most notably that they are stringent on the condition of the hologram on the 89 UD Griffeys!

Thanks again for the contest. I spent a great deal of time on the site last night looking up addresses that I have not looked at in a long time. It is time to get some TTM going again.
