Rip Rip: Mike's Box-Busting Addiction Thread

Hi Gang,

Just got back from a card shop I've wanted to visit for some time now. Didn't have a lot to spend, but picked up some randomness to rip. I have very little idea who I'm looking for in hockey, but it should be a blast all the same. I'll have to go back soon because there was just too much stuff to dig through. I mainly checked out the discounted stuff that his regular customers just don't even look at any more.

It is always fun to find out what the 1981 Traded Fernando and Raines cards look like when those boxes are opened. Good luck!

The 1989-90 Topps and OPC boxes may contain Joe Sakic rookies. The OPC specifically may contain Theoren Fleury rookies. As great as those players were, the values are depressed since OPC produced a ton more cards than they ever had to that point. NY Ranger great Brian Leetch's rookie can also be found in both and of course the usual stars of the day, e.g. Gretzky, Lemieux, Roy, Yzerman, etc.

The smaller boxes are 1988-89 and 1989-90 OPC stickers. Again, not a lot of value there. I still like them, though. You can find sticker "rookies" of Brett Hull in the '88. Ditto Sakic in the '89.

The '89 OHL set was produced for one reason. Eric Lindros. Lindros was playing for the Oshawa Generals and he was the consensus #1 draft pick for 1991. As such, the company 7th Inning Sketch produced this set (and 2 others in the subsequent seasons) to get a foothold on the demand for his cards. There are 4 Lindros cards in the set. At one time each was selling in the $15-20 range. Yeah, that set was hot. There are a number of other former NHLers in there who were high picks as well. Mike Ricci, Owen Nolan, Keith Primeau, etc.

That '87 green Classic game contained a card all of us kids would have died for- the Bo Jackson.

You also have a second year Brett Hull & Pierre Turgeon cards in both the Topps & OPC boxes. Some other key rookies include Trevor Linden, Cliff Ronning & Craig Janney.

What cards are on the hockey box bottoms?

    Have fun ripping!

Alright, I've not busted the sticker boxes yet but I've ripped the wax (OPC had serious corner problems), the 1991 Topps Micro set, the 1987 Classic game and the 1981 Topps Traded set. I'm combing through the cards more closely now and hope to have some pics of the grade-worthy candidates up soon.

I think that will be a 20k card.

Alright, here are scans for the candidates from the 1991 Topps Micro set and the box of 1989-90 Topps hockey. I'm combing through the O-Pee-Chee now, but I know there will be much fewer candidates from that box because of corner ding issues.

Considering that my real goal is to only sub cards that have a chance to slab at a grade that would sell for at least 2x my grading fee ($15-20+), I'm curious on your feedback for these.

    Mike,

I love those '89 Topps cards you have! If you're looking to sell for at least double the grading fee I wouldn't sub any. PSA is especially strict when grading this set. The only two that would have a chance at making money would be Yzerman and Roy (maybe Gilmour, too) but they'd have to grade out 10. If you decide to sub them, check the corners very well. The smallest bit of white will knock it down a grade. Check, too, the edges. Any wear on the edges and you'll be out of 10 territory. Also, just based on the scans, it looks like you have a box where the cards have a rough surface issue. PSA may knock them down based on solely that. It'd be a big gamble on those cards if your seeking profits.

    Best of luck!

I really appreciate your input on these. I don't think I've ever subbed hockey before, let alone anything from this particular set. When I send in a sub, I always include a few "maybes" that may have an outside shot at a 10 (you just never know)... if you were me and were thinking about including a few longshots, would you consider any of these?

No problem Mike. If the corners are sharp and the edges smooth I personally would send them all in BUT if you're sending them in to resell then I'd be very careful. The cards in the Topps set you want to pay really close attention to are Sakic, Gretzky and Lemieux. Here's a somewhat recent sub of '89 Topps Hockey I had.

Possibly. Seeking roughly 10 10s on that sub but as you can see didn't get any. Can't complain with a 9. I posted pics of all the slabbed cards in this thread 1989 Topps Hockey Project

Sadly, neither the 1989 OPC Hockey nor the 1987 Classic baseball revealed a single grade-worthy card. But here are remaining scans of the best candidates from my little excursion to the card shop.

No real candidates for 10s in the 1989 Topps hockey stickers, but 9s will make me money as well.

It's a whole lot of ripping on a budget. And you really don't need many hits to make it pay off.

<< <i>My first thought is to say...none. But Lindros is still a novelty and his Oshawa card might bring that. I think it's the first card in the set. >>

Good luck finding that #1 Lindros card centered. There are some out there but I busted 10 boxes last year and none were worth grading because of the centering. I subbed a few cards, hit the first 10 Primeau and think I sold it for 20 or so. Subbed the Brent Gretzky thought for sure it was a 10 and it was an 8 - sold it for 5 bucks.

<< <i>Oh, I still have the 1991 Winner's Choice racing set, but PSA hasn't graded a single card from it and I didn't recognize any of the driver's names at first glance. Not sure if I'll still go through it card by card or what. >>

I can't speak specifically about this set or the sport but finding sets with few or no cards graded is something I am always trying to find. It can at times be worth the effort no matter how obscure the set is.

I appreciate that insight. I'll go ahead and bust it to see if anything is in good enough shape to grade. If I find anything worthwhile, I'll post scans to see if anyone recognizes the dudes. I sure don't.

Ichiro looks like a bat boy. Great cards.

I wish they would have not flooded the market with 89 Pro Set football. I liked it better than 89 Score.

Yeah, I've always loved that set. That box was a purely nostalgic break for me since I'd busted nearly a full case back in 1989 trying to complete a set. I'd forgotten how horrible the collation was. I still love it.

I've been a little slow on the updates because I've been learning a new job. The commute and the hours eat up most of my day and energy, but I'm beginning to get used to it.

Just had to share a little lot that I got off eBay with some birthday money from my lady. Let the ripping commence.

Cool on the job situation, even if it's a bit more taxing on the brain for the time being. Nice lot you scored, too! image

Thanks. The job is going to be awesome and I'll be able to travel all over the US and potentially Canada. Which means I'll be asking folks about card shops to visit before my trips.

That's a cool Belleville Bulls McCarty. He was one of my favorites with the Wings. Love to watch him play.

    Nice!

Zenith made some incredibly sharp cards for the day... they didn't get a lot of love because they didn't contain true rookie cards if I recall correctly.

I've always liked the Z-Team inserts... 1995 was the first offering using Pinnacle's signature Dufex treatment, but my favorite was 1996.

But any 1995-1997 Zenith are some of my favorite cheap 90's rips.
