Shipping more than the actual item?

I just logged onto PSA to submit one item. It's the only item I need slabbed right now and the cheapest shipping is $18 USPS priority. The submission is $17 (I'm not a member). Is it just me or does it seem odd that the shipping is more, even though it's just a $1 more, than the actual submission? I'm just curious why that is? Priority USPS from California can't actually be $18 can it?

it's not just the pure shipping cost from California, but the overhead associated with it (materials, labor, etc.)

Its humorous that about the #1 complaint on ebay (shipping charges) is usually accepted without issue when it comes to other companies
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

The PSA charges are USPS postage, Insurance & handling charges and they are clearly displayed on the back of the submission form. I'm not thrilled that there
isn't a lower rate for small orders but it is what it is.

maybe you can send it to someone for a group sub? At least you won't get destroyed in S&H that way.

    It's a pin and I didn't know if I could do that.

I didn't realize you could even submit to PSA without being a member. I've been out of the game a while.

+1....I got an email on Ebay the other day questioning as to WHY IN THE HELL do I charge .50 cents extra for each additional card? They all go in the same box, so I shouldn't be charging ANYTHING extra. (Actually, the extra cards add weight to the package, which costs more to send. Also, anything over 13 ounces HAS to go Priority Mail, which obviously costs more - that particular Ebay was just being an idiot).

Meanwhile, Memory Lane just charged me $10 to ship ONE SINGLE PSA GRADED CARD!!! I am charging $3.50 on Ebay. So yes, I am in total agreement with your assessment!

I don't think this is accurate as I have all my subs shipped back on my fed ex account and I don't pay any additional fees to PSA for materials, labor etc, I just pay what the Fed Ex rate is.
  • I just personally feel that $18 is a bit much for shipping of one graded card back to me. However, it was my choice to have them provide the service and I decided to have them do so. There's not really anyone else who will grade pins so...it was pretty much them or not have it graded.

What's the insured value of the pin? That's the only reason I can think of for $18 shipping other than to make a few extra dollars.

Get a few more pins and the same $18 return shipping rate applies. That is the minimum per order. But as swartz pointed out in your OP, I wouldn't send the Cobb pin in.

  • Yeah, I'm not happy about that Cobb.
