Best Pen for Autos?

Just wondering what pen(s) to get for autographs. I thought a sharpie would be good when I had a chance to get Ken Dryden's autograph.
He signed my 1971 era leather blocker with - great signature, looked great for about 6 months.
Now it's like the ink is evaporating and the signature fading so it's barely readable.

It was only my second in person signature and both times I felt like I had the wrong pen - any ideas on best pens to use?

I don't think the problem is the pen. Sounds like unfinished leather, you'll have to condition it first before signing.

I read the title ... didn't read what item you had autographed. If you are asking specifically about that hockey item I can't help. Sorry.

Yeah, the problem is def with the leather and not the pen. Good luck.

When I get cards signed I'd prefer a sharpie. When I get baseballs signed I always bring a blue Bic Ultra Round Stic Grip. I won't ever use Papermate pens unless it's the absolute only option. I've been to multiple signings where I've seen Papermates die on guys and whoever is signing has to go over his signature, or there are marks in the ball, etc.

For jerseys I've used sharpies, but if it's a darker number, silver/gold sharpies don't display as well (learned that the hard way), so I'd recommend a thicker paint pen/marker.
  • If your getting a football Or basketball signed I would use gold or silver paint markers a black sharpie will fade due to the natural state of the leather also black sharpie autos do chip scratch off little with time.the gold or silver presents much nicer lasts on leather and if you use the correct marker will last.
  • Thanks for the tips - I'll stock up on a few different types.
The leather blocker was a one time auto unless I run into him again- I didn't think to use leather conditioner first.
