Interesting design. This is the first papal annual medal I can think of which does not feature only the bust of the pope on the obverse.

This is very possibly the worst design I've ever seen for an annual or other officially issued medal. The reverse looks like something one used to see from 1970s ads in the Sunday Parade magazine newspaper insert from the Franklin or other such "mints." The design looks cut-and-paste/photo shopped with no imagination, style or artistry. I appreciate the notion of "suffer little children," and want to tread lightly here, but the execution of the obverse brings to mind some of the unfortunate past events reported every few months in the local media. Just really bad on about every level. I considered for a long time about ending my collection with year 1 of Francis, but "free" ebay dollars from Christmas purchases, convinced me otherwise and I have one on the way. Hope they make a better effort for year III.

BTW, a couple of the later JP II annuals had other objects on the obverse with the pope, most notably the Madonna and child on his anno 25 medal. But this is the first I'm aware of with two articulated busts on the obverse.

  • Didn't they spell Jesus wrong on the first one?

Yup, his year one had the error. It was withdrawn after some sales (always seems to be at least one on ebay) and a corrected version issued. At least it did have an interesting, well executed design.

Just who is Lesus, never heard about him in Sunday school. Actually I don't remember too much of Sunday school save looking at the girls.

The result of confusing the I, lower case L and Latin J. Too back we'll never actually hear the back story of how this occurred - and who got fired. And, I would have loved for the correction to have used a "J" rather than I but that was just too much to hope for.
