Dan Marino PSA 10 rookie undervalued

Check out the Dan Marino PSA 10 rookie in the PWCC auction at $1,425 with a couple of days to go.
This card seems undervalued with the elway rookie PSA 10's in the same set sometimes selling for 3-4 times more than the Marino PSA 10.
Marino and elway were both one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
And no I am not the consignor of this Marino PSA 10 rookie. I think that with the rice, Montana and elway rookie PSA 10's we have seen already gone up in price that the Marino is the next great to follow upwards in price.

Comments

  • I agree the Marino PSA has upside potential - however when comparing to Elway we need to factor in population report. There are roughly 3 times more Marino PSA 10s than Elways. From what I'm told by folks who know more about grading than I do, this is due primarily to surface and print dots (snow) being more prevalent on the elway

IMHO, another reason for the Marino being much easier than the Elway to find in high grade, is that more Marinos were hoarded in the 1980s. Marino was the Golden Boy of the NFL, and set the league on fire with his play, while Elway came into the league with quite an attitude (famously refusing to play if drafted by the then Baltimore Colts, who held the #1 pick). Elway also didn't have near the success Marino did, as Marino played under Don Shula, and Elway played for Dan Reeves (not exactly a passing-minded coach).

You also need to factor in the fact that as great as he was, Marino never won a Super Bowl (and only got to one, in his second year). Montana and Elway each won multiple Super Bowls. While Marino broke many of the passing records, and stood at the top when he retired, his records have themselves been broken by Favre and P Manning (both of whom have won Super Bowls).

Unfortunately, I don't see the Marino RC holding up as well, since in the future, he'll possibly be remembered more closely to Fran Tarkenton, than with Elway, Montana, and the like.

  • The last three Marino PSA 10's on ebay the last two weeks all ended north of $1600 ($1800, $1603, $1625) ...this card could have been had a roughly year ago for $850.

I have to agree, I am not so sure it's fair, but regardless without the rings he will never get the attention of guys that have rings. Case in point look at the last 10 to 15 years, when they go to compare the current greats like Favre, Brady, Rodgers, and Manning you never even see Marino in the comparisions or charts. Manning looks like the modern day Marino but he does have 2 SB apperances and 1 win.

While my eye test says he was one of the best, but the facts are the guy doesn't even have a winning playoff record. Take a look:

    QB Playoff records
Successful coin BST transactions with Gerard and segoja.

Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.

The huge price difference is based mostly on population figures. The Elway has always been a more condition sensitive card based primarily on centering. It was this way back in 1984 when they came out.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !

+1 My spidey senses tell me the next Elway PSA 10 auctioned if a clean and good example of a 10 might fetch a record price as it's been a while since one has been auctioned
