Query about BBCE-authenticated rack boxes

I recently stumbled across this listing and it piqued my interest. No, it has absolutely nothing to do with the purveyor of the box; if any replies take it that direction then I'm cleansing my hands right now and you guys can have at it. I'm genuinely interested in the means. Up until now, I didn't realize Steve authenticated "all-star" rack boxes, if you will. I'm actually in the midst of a similar project, but I don't think I'll ever be able to wrap and conceal the contents. I do think it's rather cool, however, especially with Steve's letter of authenticity detailing each and every rack.

Has anyone ever done this? Or contemplated it?

Personally, I want my unopened to be untouched since it left the factory with collation intact, not a mishmash box of assembled packs.

I typically hold the same mindset, but it's contingent upon availability. For certain years and certain sports, we're at the two-minute warning. If you wait for an intact rack box straight from the factory, holding your breath isn't something I'd recommend.

I saw on Ebay while back they had 1985 FB cello box with Elway on top of every pack. It was not BBC but in a Gia case.
  • I didn't know BBCE did this either. Guess I know what to do with all my 84 and 85 racks with stars, just make a box out of it.

Liked another one of his listings for the 1976 box, but very high with the $9999 price. Not to mention looks like one corner got smushed somewhere along the line.

I'm not holding my breath, I came to peace with the fact that I'll never own any prior to the 80s a long time ago. If it doesn't meet that standard, I'd rather not own it. I definitely do not understand a premium being associated with that box, authentic stars on top racks should be displayed, not wrapped and hidden.

That was intended to be a generally speaking "you," encompassing all. Not specifically aimed your direction.

I can definitely appreciate your purist mentality. I'd give anything to roll the clock way back and be able to completely eschew these crossroads. That's not an option, unfortunately, so I've been forced time and again to adjust my expectations -- and inject a dose of creativity along the way. The irony is that although I'm unable to get my hands on a number of things I'd like, I'm enjoying the hobby more than ever before.

Also, I'm on board with your last sentence.

image I have a pretty wide range of interests in the hobby, so I don't get upset knowing I can't have it all image

My thoughts as well. Love the eye appeal of a vintage rack with a hall-of-famer on topimage

  • I think the premium is for the rippers. All things being equal, if I were going to buy a rack box with the intent to rip them open, I would choose the one that BBCE says is full of unaltered packs AND loaded with stars. You could easily buy a BBCE sealed box made up of random packs with not a single star on the front or back of any pack.

I take the flip side of this. I put a premium on the star packs not to open, but to display and enjoy. A ripper wouldn't want to bust those packs if they can see that the card showing wouldn't yield a high grade.

+1, top and bottom cards are the most likely to be damaged from handling as well. I'd rather have a centered common on top and sequencing knowledge for ripping.

Good point. Either way, there is an obvious premium for the star packs.
