I question I have been pondering...

Why would anyone buy billion gold like gold Eagles and krugerrand so instead of generic AU or low MS saints or double Eagles? Seems they later would have much more upside.

$20 Double Eagle: 90% Gold - 10% Copper = 33.44 grams of gold.
One Ounce $50 Gold American Eagle : 91.67% Gold - 3% Silver - 5.33% Copper = 33.931 grams of gold
Add wear on the Double Eagle and you are getting a bit less gold in the coin than in a BU Gold Eagle.
If the coins are the same price you are losing in bullion.
Upside? Maybe, but if the prices are the same now I doubt that common gold Eagles will outpace bullion prices.

As close as is the amount of gold in each modern and classic coins, one should not worry which has more.
Classic coins give you a little ownership of something historic.
Buying modern Eagles (either gold or silver) only allows you to participate in precious metal speculation.
It is significantly less, it only has .9675 oz of gold, and most of the time you pay more for the "story"...
You get 3 1/10 gold Eagles more with $$$ left over ...

Gold Eagles give you more actual gold bang for the buck than Saints do. If you want to pay extra for coolness that's your choice. JMBullion has raw cleaned Saints at $1345 ea [min of 10] $110 more than spot [$1390 or $155 more than spot on a 1 ounce basis].
They also have 1 ounce AGEs random year [min of 20] for $1287 or $52 over spot. Which do you think is a better buy?

If choosing between the two, I'd rather have the bullion. More gold, less money. If one thinks the older gold has better upside...in this scenario, ask yourself how many cleaned numismatic silver coins do you actively seek.
