The Ace Case...Anybody remember these?

Hey guys,

I'm attempting to clean out my home office/hobby desk and came across an Ace Case. Man, I haven't seen one of these in a while. As I recall these things were all the rage back in the early '80's when MINT meant just about anything without fuzzy corners or creases. There was no Near Mint, Near Mint-Mint. Just MINT, then EX-MT. These bad boys were supposed to offer the best in protection for your valuable cards. Just look at the rounded corners! Ugh! Thank goodness I didn't use these for all my good cards. As I recall, I put things like the hot '81 Topps Joe Charboneau rookies in 'em.

Anybody else around in the early '80's and remember these things?

Todd

Good stuff. I love some of the wacky paraphernalia we used to protect our special collectibles over the years. The "ace case" doesn't ring a bell with me, but at the time I was 10, and didn't know about collecting cards just yet. image

I would have been in my early teens and not yet a serious card collector. At least, not one who took the utmost care with my cards, anyway. As such, I don't remember the Ace Case. I do remember Joe Charboneau though image. I think they used to have a chant for him, "Go! Joe! Charboneau!"
  • I was only 13 or 14 when these came out. I sure thought of myself as a serious collector. I mowed a lot of lawns to buy a lot of what is considered junk '80's stuff now.

I remember them well. Now & then they would be very tough to open as if they were welded together w/ the card locked inside.
& the soft plastic would bend upon pressure.
Gee! I wonder why they went the way of the Edsel?

  • Yes, these things were very flimsy. You'd almost bend the card in half diagonally trying to get them open. Seems like there weren't a whole lot of options for holding single cards back in the early 80's. I can remember cutting up individual sleeves from 9-pocket pages. I think the sleeves had rounded corners too.
