My NYINC 2015 show experience

I arrived Wednesday afternoon, hoping to catch the CNG auction prior to their going past the lots of interest to me. Mis-timed. Oops. I wandered around by myself until JCMHouston arrived, then had a drink with him and sat in on the Baldwin/Markov/Goldberg auction with him for a bit. Then, went back to my room to marshal my energy for the upcoming few days. I stayed up until midnight so I can view online the special NYINC offering from Nomos/CNG. I didn't get anything from that batch, even though the Elizabeth I half crown (near EF) and Charles I half pound (EF) really enticed me.
Thursday morning I think I met Zohar and JCM for breakfast before going in as Early Bird members. I made a beeline to my Italian dealer and proceeded to be a bad boy. The exchange rate is so enticing now, and that dealer has so many superb Italian States coins. After much back and forth, I walked away with four lovely silver pieces.
My next stop that morning was Nomos and CNG, where I hemmed and hawed about the E1 1/2 Crown (the 1/2 Pound was already sold). I really wanted it, but had been pulled also by the ex-EPN coin in the HA auction (not sold) and the gVF piece in the CNG inventory. I eventually passed on the ex-EPN piece because of the reverse planchet flaws. Then, I decided to drop the gVF piece because I really want a coin like the near EF piece (though *much* more expensive).
So, I walked around some more and made my way to Atlas Numismatics and bought three modestly priced Italian States pieces from him.
Later, JCM and I made our way to Baldwin's where we saw nothing there for us in their current inventory listing so I asked about previewing the lots for their upcoming FPL. Steve Hill showed us the loose pages from the catalog, and both JCM and I found stuff that we can add to our collections: mine was an Anglo-Saxon coin.
By now, I had been a bad boy four times: CNG web purchases before the show, HA Signature auction winnings, stuff from my Italian dealer, and now Baldwin's. I kept on thinking of the conversation I may yet have with my wife.
Fortunately, the day finally finished for me and I went to Andy Lustig's table for wine and cheese (and conversation). I drank a little bit too much wine, and was a bit "funny" during dinner with Zohar and JCM's family. Apparently, I was just the right amount of funny that I didn't embarrass anyone (that I know of).
Friday brought a breakfast meeting with a few forum folks: Zohar, JCM, Dennis88 and Harasha. Then, off to the show for them. I went back to my room and crashed. I had caught a cold and was feeling the developing effects of it. Dragged myself to the show by just after 11am and made a beeline to Baldwin's to pay for my Thursday purchase.
In our haste to get things done, Zohar and I forgot to meet up with another fellow member at a previously arranged time and place. Very sorry!!!
Friday was a blur for me because I had no energy. I made my way back to the Italian dealer just to sit down and chat. I looked at his inventory, and realized I missed a coin from Thursday: a super gorgeous mid-18th Century half crown piece from Tuscany/Florence. My 5th coin from him this show.
And, this coin alone makes me bad boy #5.
Friday evening I participated in the SB auction sitting next to Zohar. I watched Zohar have his accomplishments, and then had a late dinner with him. Good job, Z!
Saturday was check out day for me. I dumped my stuff in JCM's room at the Waldorf (I was across the street), and went to the show. Stayed for a few more hours, and met up with some friends (one is a US collector). Went to the Spink's table and saw their display of a new hoard with awesome high-end, attractive pieces from the Danelaw, Athelstan and Edward the Elder. I.Must.Have.
I wrapped up my trip to NYC with by buying two felt cases for raw coins.
When I got home, I won two modestly priced coins from the SB auction from doing online live bidding. This plus the Atlas purchases really counts as bad boy #6.
So, in total, I've been a VERY BAD BOY.

I did manage to get to the show Saturday afternoon, spent some time talking with Antony Wilson, Bill from CNG, and met Andy Lustig. I wasn't really expecting to find any new Northumbrian material, and didn't, so I came home empty handed. I was hoping to preview a large lot of unidentified stycas in an upcoming auction but it was not available.
My wife was with me, I was looking for something for her Roman empress denarii set. She didn't find anything to her liking and then I received a phone call from my real estate broker so I ended up leaving fairly early.
Which brings me to the other interesting event of the day. Made an offer on a house to buy, and looks like things will work out!
So most likely I outspent all of you this weekend!
I feel bad I didn't get to meet up with most of you, but hopefully next time will plan things better.
<< <i>Sorry I missed you on Saturday- EVP- Did you preview any of the Goldberg lots? Did you so happen to look at the George i 1723 Crown? Did anyone for that matter? >>
I saw a Geo ??? crown (I think in 63) through the case, and it looked nice from a distance. I didn't look at it carefully, or else I'd have known what coin I saw. I don't even recall what insert said.

<< <i>Glad to hear you had a good show. Sounds like a lot more action in the Italian sector than British. >>
Not sure if that is true. Only one dealer had really great Italian States stuff, and Atlas also had some nice lesser priced Italian States material. The Italian States stuff in the auctions didn't really go wild. Nor did the British.
So, I think calling it a sector trend may be drawing too much conclusion.

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
The 1723 crown in the Goldberg Auction was raw- there was a 1687 James II Crown that was graded 64 by PCGS. These were auctioned at the show and not in the case as part of preview for another upcoming auction. In their case on the bourse floor, I did see the 1696 William III Crown that was graded by NGC in a 63. There was a 1741 George II graded 62.

Raw coins?
Yes, Andy, raw coins. If one has confidence in the seller, oneself, and the coin, then it's ok to buy raw. Else, don't buy the coin even if slabbed.
Note to the audience: my response isn't actually directed to Andy Lustig, and know that he is not a slave to the holder. I think his response to me was tongue-in-cheek.
Many people will look at the slab first, then the coin. TomB, on the lite-side, will look at a slabbed coin prior to looking at the grade, then see f he agrees with the slabbed grade and go from there. I think that is a good approach, but admittedly it's tougher on the world side.
