A few months back someone on the Currency board inquired about "Rare, Scarce, and Common" items. To shed a bit of light on the topic, I analyzed the eBay US Paper Money category search results, and found the following ...
"Rare" Items in eBay: Paper Money, US = 2,967
"Scarce" Items in eBay: Paper Money, US = 668
"Common" Items in eBay: Paper Money, US = 3
So it's perfectly clear that ...
Scarce items are rarer than Rare items, but it's only Common items that are TRULY rare!

Like any item in economics, scarcity means there are not enough of them for everyone to have as many as they want. So the price will rise to a level where the people that want it the most will buy it, and people who do not want it as much don't buy it.
<< <i>An item is scarce or rare if it CAN'T BE FOUND on EBay ! >>
This could be sort of true, but the way eBay treats sellers it makes one wonder if eBay becomes more of a last resort thing for sellers as opposed to a first option.

Of course they are, but I believe that scarcity in numismatics requires a narrower definition.

I collect unique major modern mint errors.
All are scarce and most are extremely rare.
It doesn't matter if there's one or one million of something.
If demand is greater than supply it's "scarce", otherwise it is not.

That's when there's not a lot of a particular coin due to rarity or hording from popularity and you might have a hard time finding one for yourself...

That data is insightful.

This is so true.
