Ebay buy/sell question

Has anyone here ever sold on Ebay and the buyer wants to pick up the item in person, due to living in close proximity to you, the seller? Mainly what I wonder about is if you buy from a seller and arrange for personal pickup are you still covered by Ebay return privledge rules despite seeing in hand the item. Do you have less of an excuse for a return because you saw it in hand. Can the buyer return it anyways for any reason, or is the fact the buyer picks it up in person negates that right. Or is it just better at all times to handle the transaction TTM. Thanks for your observations.

I would not do it unless it was cash transaction.

I would do so at a public location. I met a guy once and we have been BSTers ever since. Very nice for both of us.

Are you the buyer or the seller? I have done this as the buyer two times. The first time did not go well for me as I was buying two 1980 BB wax boxes and I paid cash. One of the boxes turned out to be resealed and one was good. I don't think he was the resealer, I think he just sold it without knowing. Unfortunately for me I was new to unopened and while I inspected the first box which was good, I didn't look carefully at the second (I probably wouldn't have known even if I did look at it). In fact I didn't look at it at all until after I sent it to Steve at BBCE and found out it was a bad box. I didn't ship the boxes to Steve until way after I bought the boxes so I was SOL on that transaction. The second time, I bought a 1961 Fleer PSA Cousy and a 1981 Fleer wax box and the sale went smoothly.

Whether buyer or seller, I definitely recommend doing the transaction in a public place. Both times I did it we met at my work (my office is in a mall and we have closed circuit cameras in our office. Honestly, now I would probably just do the deals TTM. PayPal is a nice safety net and you never know who might be crazy.

Absolutely. If they pay by PayPal and pick up local, they can win a not received case since you don't have tracking.

I have occasionally. It's resulted in quite a bit of repeat business without the pesky fees.
  • I sold a guy a large 6ft. display case. When he came to pick it up he saw I had some other items for sale & bought them!

On another occasion, A girl bought a electric scooter for about $200 & ask me if she could pick it up in a couple of months. I said that would be fine as long as she paid for it now. She paid for it & I never heard from her again. One day I was going to move out of state, so I tried to contact her but never got a response? She basically just gave me $200 for nothing.

I also purchased a treadmill once & picked it up myself, there were no problems at all.

And one more recently, I sold a 1992 Fleer basketball uncut sheet that was mounted. Sold it as pick up only. The buyer was from out of town, I met him at a hotel & delivered it to him. All went well.

  • Yes, with all the normal provisos about covering yourself in the case of an "item not received" claim, safety, etc. It can lead to good deals or repeat business or both!

miss the old days.......when i was the buyer and the seller was a local guy, but took me by surprise a couple days after my card purchase while i was raking leaves in the front yard, dude rides up the driveway on his bike, introduces himself and then takes a small package out of his backpack and hands it to me. image

Thanks for all the comments. I think when the time comes to list items for sale here/Ebay/elsewhere, will keep transactions TTM.
