1992 Upper Deck Shaq RC Questions

I'm just about complete with the Shaq RC set and had some questions about this card.

1) What is different about the Trade card?
2) Why is the 1A version of the card so much more valuable (especially in PSA 10) than the Trade version?
3) Is the Trade version acceptable in the RC set?

Thanks.

The trade version was sent out to people who pulled a redemption card for it from packs. I don't believe it is allowed in RC sets because the regular version is more valuable. It's probably also excluded because it's a redemption card, not a mainstream one.

  • Great. Thanks!

Due to Shaq's contract with Classic, Upper Deck wasn't able to put his RC in low-number boxes. Instead a redemption card was in the boxes, and the card had to be mailed and the 'Trade' version (1b) of the card was sent back. The high-number boxes included the regular version (1) of the card.

There are significantly more 'Trade' versions out there because there were more redemption cards printed than the regular version in the high-number boxes. Even though mailing a redemption card in isn't the most convenient thing to do, Shaq was pretty much the hottest thing in the world at that point and I'm sure everyone who pulled a redemption card mailed it in.

This was an interesting deal at the time.

I bought into the "Classic" card first in - this being his "first" card.

So, as was said UD did a redemption deal instead - my son picked one up thru the mail in.

That was only good till Jan. when all the other issues came out and NO ONE wanted the Classic card.

I will say - a savvy collector/dealer bought the Classic case - waited till it caught fire and sold the boxes. If memory serves you could buy on the secondary market a case for 300 bucks (10 boxes I think) - the boxes were selling for like 90 bucks when hot is what I remember.

If anyone didn't get a 92 Classic set? PM me and I'll send one to you... Fee? Buy me a pretzel and coke at the next national. image

  • There's about 30 different Classic variations - Draft Picks and 4 Sport cards galore. I have a few of them. There's an auto in there with different serials I think. I'd be interested in that if you had it. That Master set has got to be a pain (like most masters I reckon). Great info guys - it's why this forum rules.
  • I saw a box of Classic for $10 a month ago and passed on it. But back then, Shaq was gold if he was in a product.

What is the actual difference in the cards? I have never been able to figure it out.

Yeah, how do you tell them apart?

On the trade card, the word "Trade" is written in big gold letters across the top.

Across the top front. The high number version says "#1 NBA Draft Pick" across the top front.

    Regular/high number card

    Trade/low number card

Is the regular version (1) considered the "key RC" for Shaq? It is difficult for me to decide with modern cards since there are 4,000 RCs for every player these days.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

Whose opinion matters most to you? My favorite Shaq rookie is his Topps Gold card; but I'm just a sucker for parallel inserts like that.
  • PSA certainly thinks the Upper Deck non trade card is his key card. It's in that "200 Sportscards in the Hobby" set and book after all. My favorite card of him is just the base 92 Classic Draft Picks card with him doing a monster dunk. It's not an expensive card even in a 10, but I've always liked it because it's in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at LSU where I went to school and grew up around. That court and scoreboard is so familiar to me.

I like the Topps Gold card that Jeff mentions, but to me his key card is the 92 Stadium Club Beam Team card. It's at least his most valuable I would imagine.

Shaq definitely has a few interesting rookie cards as he was then the hottest thing at the time and turns out one of the few that actually lived up to the hype. I've been stocking up on cases in hopes these cards take a step up in Two years when he makes the Hall. I think the best and most valuable are the stadium clubs closely followed by the upper deck. As mentioned before his rookie cards are found in the series two versus series one boxes. Upperdeck has both retail and hobby boxes so if you buy the right one you get a shot at another Shaq card too in the Rookie Standout series.
