Topps Photo Variations PSA/DNA

Just wondering if anybody knows if/how PSA designates Topps photo variations on PSA/DNA flips? I see for graded flips they have a line for the variation (seen here). And is a designation like that something you need to request, or will PSA do it on their own? Also, wondering the same with OPC Retro cards for hockey.
